Can you drive long distances with a bad catalytic converter?
I have a 2001 Honda Accord LX and the catalytic converter just started making rattling sounds when the car is idle or when i decelerate from certain speeds (when i go down from 45mph to 35mph). I have an upcoming trip from Anaheim to the Grand Canyon which is roughly a 6 hour drive. Would it be a bad idea to drive it there? I was told its driveable, I wanna know how driveable though?
and if it is, would it be fine if i drove in two hour intervals and rested it for about an hour in between?
It's usually the heat shield rattling. The converter bed is probably fine.
No
Did an actual mechanic inspect the vehicle? If not, then that's what you need before that long drive… Better safe than sorry
Sounds like heat shield rattling. Sometimes mechanics will remove them if they break loose an rattle. It is just a heat shield that keeps some of that heat off the floor. It is still drivable.
Id ask someone but it should be fine.
Get the car seen by a mechanic before the converter falls off.
Are you sure it's not just the converter heat shields rattling? If the car has plenty of power and there's a loose baffle in the converter it's just noise. When converters plug up and fail the motor won't go over 40 mph.
Hi so the issue is about air pollution and nothing else. So if stopped by a police officer you will get a fine.
The thing with cat converters is that they generally fail and block the exhaust. That means an increase in fuel consumption and reduced power. However sometimes the rattle is just a rock between the converter and the heat shield
Check for a o2 sensor behind the catalytic converter
- How long can you drive a Honda Fit continuosly (without stopping except for refuelling for a minute) I have a 2013 Honda Fit 1.3 L with 50k miles on its clock. So far, it still runs smooth like new. How long can I drive it continuosly until it overheats?
- How long can you drive on a donut tire? Look I really need a number of miles i can go. I've heard 500 and 1000 miles. I'm driving on a new donut on the back right tire in a 08 honda crv. I'm going 45mph or less at all times. Drive on paved roads.
- Is my catalytic converter the problem? I have a Honda civic 91 and its a 4th gen sedan. The problem with it is that the engine cranks but it won't start. I checked the spark plugs and they are all good. Battery has been recently replaced. What i don't get is why it starts up at times and doesn't. Could it be by any chance the catalytic converter that's ruined? I checked it recently, it wants to start but it chokes.
- Can I separate a 2000 Honda Civic EX exhaust manifold from its catalytic converter? Just learned that I have a crack in the exhaust manifold of my 2000 Honda Civic EX. I could buy a new manifold with a attached catalytic converter for about $170 but could get a used manifold for $12. I would rather save myself the $100+ by just replacing the manifold. So my question is would I be able to separate the exhaust manifold from the catalytic converter, and switch in a functional but used one?
