Diesel fuel in my car?

I accidentally put some diesel fuel in my car. It's a 2012 Honda Accord sedan with a 4-cylinder engine.

I had pumped about two gallons of diesel fuel into my car's gas tank when I realized what I was doing and stopped. I then filled the rest of the tank with nine gallons of regular unleaded gas.

To be on the safe side, I had my car towed to a garage where the mechanic was able to drain the diesel fuel and clean out the engine, gas tank and gas lines, and the fuel pump. He said that diesel fuel is one of the worst things you can put in your car. Will my car be permanently damaged and if so, how? Or did I overreact?

NO, IT WILL BE OK, SINCE YOU GOT IT ALL DRAINED OUT, YOU DIDN't HAVE TO WASTE MONEY ON FILLING IT UP ONLY TO DRAIN IT OUT. ONCE YOU NOTICED WHAT YOU DID, YOU SHOULD HAVE PUSHED IT TO THE SIDE, CALLED A WRECKER AND NOT FILLED IT UP, YOU WASTED SOME MONEY WHEN YOU DID THAT. BUT NOW THAT YOU DID DO ALL OF THAT, YOUR CAR SHOULD BE FINE.

IF IT WAS ME, WHEN I REALIZED I HAD ONLY PUT 2 GAL. OF DIESEL IN IT, I WOULD HAVE FILLED IT UP WITH GAS AND RAN IT OUT.

Over reaction - YES.
Gas it UP and drive it.

You did not over react; you did the proper things; good that you had the fuel drained properly

Diesel fuel destroys catalytic converters on gas cars. So you saved yourself a chunk of money.

How did you even get the nozzle in fllertube, it should be too big to fit.

You MAY have gotten by with moving to a gas pump and filling fully with gas to dilute the diesel but, that civic doesn't have a big gas tank and you could still have a 20% mixture and it likely would run badly. A larger car with a 20 gallon tank would probably be neat 10% and that would be a lot better.
You did EXACTLY what you should have done. I'd like to know how the diesel filler nozzle fit into your tank?

You handled it correctly, there should be no damage done. Diesel is oil and does not work in gas engines.

You are fine. Putting gasoline in a diesel vehicle is very bad news, but some diesel in a gasoline vehicle, especially if you didn't drive it, is not a big problem. In a few cars, like Toyota hybrids, diesel fuel can collect in the cylinders and bend a rod (because the mechanical compression ratio is 13:1). I have not heard of that happening with less than a gallon of diesel.

Well you started it by now… Did you do the right thing? In want to know

Why did you add more gasoline when you realized your mistake
unless the mechanic was able to flush out all the sediments of the diesel it is possible some elements of that gas is sticking to the engine parts and could cause problems later on, you are not entirely safe

  • Why gasoline better than diesel? Over 11.7 million cars sells gasoline than 2.9 million less selling diesel cars in the US But can't find diesel honda, Toyota, nissan, or other Asia cars.
  • Which is the correct option to buy. Either Petrol Version or Diesel Version of Car? This is Sanjay, and staying in Chennai. I want to buy a car. Had 2 options in mind one with Swift Zxi and other with Honda Amaze S-MT (M). But am confused with which version to buy. Petrol or Diesel. With the current Price's and future hikes in fuel, which would be the correct option to buy. I will travel atleast 200-300 Km per month. Let me know any additional details if you need. This is my First Car.
  • Which diesel car should i buy? VW Vento or Honda City? And why? I plan on buying a new manual transmission diesel sedan car in India. I have shortlisted the VW Vento (New 2015 facelift model), and the Honda City, and I have a budget around 12.5 lakhs. Which one should I go for?
  • Suzuki swift vdi vs honda city diesel? Which is faster? Hi, I want to know the faster car between these two. I know it is not worth to compare these two cars, because both cars are different in all factors and honda city being costlier than swift. But I want to compare these two cars in terms of acceleration and top speed. So which car is good in both acceleration and top end. - thank you.
