Is a car with this much miles worth it?

There's Honda Accord 1998 car I might buy. The miles on the car is 220,000 miles. I don't know if it's worth it, my mom told me it's not worth it, with that many miles. Is it true? Should I get the car or not?

It's not worth what? It may be worth $1500 if it looks good and doesn't burn or leak oil. A Honda or Toyota with 220K miles is worth any other car with 150K miles.

Drive the car for 15-20 minutes as test drive on freeway, local.
Also test stopping/hard stopping

Make a judgement call
Check for leaks

Also, if you're set on the car after this test, do yourself a favor and bring the car to a mechanic with the buyer BEFORE you buy it and pay him the money to have him check it out.

How much?

I'd buy it. Make sure that it is not too rusted and does not burn oil. If these things check out, you can get quite a few more miles out of a good Honda. If it does burn oil, that means the engine is worn out.

Once you pass 200K the car will not last.
Unless they pay you to take it… Pass

You didn't state any $$ amount…220000 miles…18 yrs old… Less than $ 1000

If the motor is quiet, doesn't smoke and/or leak then it sounds like the car has driven a lot of highway miles and the mileage should not be too much of a concern. My old Honda CRV was still running like new at 300,000km (180,000 miles). I would at least compare the price against other similar cars advertised, and make a decision from there.

My 1999 maxima has 205k miles and i have no doubts itll hit 300k, but thats cuz i've maintained it to the best of my ability with full synthetic motor oil and cuz it has a manual transmission and they last longer than automatics. Drive the accord, see if it smokes or makes any thudding noises from the engine, listen to it idle. Unscrew the oil fill cap and see if any fumes come out of it, if fumes do come out then there's lots of blowby cuz the piston rings are worn, aka don't buy. If it has an automatic transmission, i wouldnt buy it, as the transmission might have to be rebuilt before it hits 250k. I would pay 1500 for that accord. The engine would probably make it to 270k but if its your first car id try to get something with lower miles.

The price and mechanical condition are what matters. Even then, its a risk.

  • Is it worth it to trade a 2003 Toyota Corolla almost 130k miles for a 2004+ Acura TL 90k-110k miles? This is my moms old car and she got the Honda Pilot, she gave it her old car to me as my first car, but I want to trade it for a nicer car but used Acura are expensive and every time I asked the sellers to trade my Corolla and says no. Do you think Acura owners don't like Toyota?
  • Is it worth buying an older car with original miles? I'm looking at this 98 Honda Prelude Sh that has 20k original miles. They're asking 14 grand for this car which normally would turn me away. But I see similar preludes around my area that sell for about 5-6 grand with "reasonable" miles. (140k-170k). Now I'm having second thoughts, any suggestions? No doubt I'm in love with this prelude, but 14 grand is gut wrenching.
  • Is it worth buying a used Chevy Volt with over 100K miles on it? The price is right, but is it worth it? I know I would have to install a power charging station which is an additional 1000 dollars. There's one for sale at 14,500 dollars… But most used Volts are around 23,000 dollars. My other two considerations are a new 2015 Honda Fit or a used Mark 6 VW Golf TDI I've seen people on youtube who average 120 mpg with the volt! One guy's was even 1000 mpg, I don't think he even brought it to the gas station since he bought the car!
  • I'm planning to buy 2005 Honda CRV, with 140K miles on it, how much worth do you think? It looks in a clean condition. @Lan K, the vehicle looks clean, inside out, clean title, and timing belt and water pump has been changed. He was asking $7000, and Now he come down to $5,600.
