Is buying a used car with a rebuilt transmission bad?
I'm looking into buying a used 1999 Honda Accord coupe. I found one on craigslist, 150k miles but it has a rebuilt transmission. Is that bad?
No, but the 150,000 miles is. Keep looking!
I would avoid. Not necessarily bad, but that car has little going for it.
150,000 isn't too bad if you can do your own maintenance. Rebuilt tranny does point to neglect/abuse though.
In this case it depends on when the transmission was rebuilt. Honda had terrible problems with the automatic transmissions mated to the 6 cylinder engines from 1998-2005… This is one of those. See the first source for details. It didn't die from abuse but from a design defect.
The good news is that the faulty transmission was rebuilt. Now… Was that before or after the fix was known (2004)? If before it is still a risk; if 2004 or later it is less of a risk than it would have been if not rebuilt.
As long as the rebuilt transmission was rebuilt properly it should have no problems. Honda had transmission problems between 98-07 so if done right one major cost out of the way
