What is the material composition of a vehicle's axle?

A general composition will do, but if anyone knows the composition of a 2003 Honda Accord LX 3.0L front axle that would be best. I'm doing a case study project in my material science class. I assume it is a type of steel, but don't know what kind. I also assume it is heat treated. If anyone knows the treatment process it goes through that would also help.

First thing you always want to consider when trying to identify a mystery steel is what it was made to do. For structural steels like A-36 a simple carbon steel (less than.3% carbon) is needed. Steels like these are not heat treatable.
Tool steels requiring strength like you axle are usually going to be a medium carbon (.4-.5%C). Typically an axle will be 1040 or a 4x40 alloy. Heat treatment on these are fairly simple.

It isn't until you get into wear resistance that you need higher carbon content.

As far as heat treating a med carbon alloy, heat to non magnetic and quench in oil (thin parts) warm water for thicker piece. Temper from 350 - 450F to get the desired hardness.

  • What does P mean on a parking ticket where your vehicle type is written? As in: Vehicle GRY HOND P? I received a parking ticket and really can't afford to pay it! My friend told me I should look for typos on the ticket in order to contest it. On the ticket where the vehicle type is listed, the line reads: "Vehicle GRY HOND P". I do own a grey honda, but I was not sure what the P stood for? I tried to google but couldn't find anything - please help!
  • Can a dealer get a vehicle from another make? I have been going online recently, have seen the triumph daytona 675, and would like to look at and (probably) buy one, however the shop in town is a honda motorcycles, will they be able to source a bike from another make or are they stuck with new hondas? (the nearest triumph dealer is a good 2-3 hours drive away)
  • What is the freshest material for custom seat covers? I'm about to buy custom seat covers for my 2004 Honda CR-V. Since I live in the desert, I'm looking for the material that would be the most comfortable and fresh possible. Please, forgive my mistake. I meant "Cool". We have temperatures in the 110's during the summer, so I'm looking for the most comfortable option possible temperature-wise.
  • How much to fix a 2003 Honda CRV driverside axle? I was driving last night when I hit a chem and now only the drivers side wheel is bent backwards so I think it may just be the part of the axle, nothing else in the car is damaged but how much money should I be looking into spending?
