What kind of radio do i need to install in my car?
I just bought a 2001 Honda accord and it has a radio but I want to buy a radio with an aux cord. Can anyone tell me which kind I should buy and how much it would cost to install please?! I'm a 16 year old girl who knows nada about cars haha.
Regular pioneer single din radio less than 100 bucks
That's a good radio in your car. You can use an fm modulator instead of a whole new stereo. The modulator creates a private radio station and plays into the radio's antenna and when the modulator is turned on and plugged into an mp3 player, iPhone, or other sound source, the radio can tune it in. I just put one in my old Corolla- made by Audiovox. It cost $50 and I did the installation- 30 minutes. Do they teach auto shop at your school? Maybe the teacher can help with the installation, if there isn't someone at home who could do it.
Just about every after-market head unit sold right now includes an auxiliary input feature. If you shop around you can find entry-level models from decent brands starting around $50-60, but you might want to spend more to get other features like build-in Bluetooth and a USB port. Head units with these features usually run between $70-130 and up. (You can save a little if you don't need a CD player. Models without built-in CD players are becoming common).
After-market head units come in two universal sizes: single-DIN, meaning 7" wide and 2" tall, or double-DIN, which is 7" wide and 4" tall. Single-DIN units are more common, but either size will fit your vehicle with the right mounting kit.
You'll also need two adapter parts: a mounting kit to make the new head unit fit your vehicle, and a wire harness to you can connect the after-market head unit's wiring to your factory radio plug. Look for Metra part numbers 99-7895 (or 95-7895 if you choose a double-DIN head unit) and 70-1721. You'll pay less if you buy these parts online.
This vehicle isn't too difficult for a do-it-yourself project if you use the right adapter parts. You'll need to splice the wires together between your after-market head unit and the adapter harness; use crimp-type connectors or solder and heat shrink. Don't use wire nuts or just twist and tape the wires. The mounting kit will include instructions for taking your dash apart and removing the stock radio.
If you buy your new radio online from Crutchfield ( http://www.crutchfield.com/ ) they usually include the adapter parts and give you a tech sheet showing how to do your own installation. Some car audio stores will include free installation when you buy the new stereo from them, but this usually doesn't include the adapter parts, and you'll probably have to buy a more expensive stereo--there's not enough profit margin in the entry-level units to allow a store to include installation with the purchase.
