Advice for a broke college student about JDM cars?
Well, to start off during high school I drove a 1997 Subaru legacy that over time I had dumped money into for bbs rims, coil overs, magna flow exhaust, tinted windows, etc. Well unfortunately the main bearing died on the second 2.5L engine swap only months after install so I had to cut my losses and take a buy out from my mechanic. I recently moved to a new area and am starting college, but only have 2,500 saved for my next car. I've always wanted a JDM honda ek or eg but I don't know what to do as far as taking the steps to getting a nice sounding and looking car but also getting the reliable side of things. I don't have a job yet and have no form of transportation, I just moved into my dorm. Any advice?
No job, no transportation… You really can't afford any car. The fact is, if you want a TRUE "JayDeeEm" Honda, what you have saved so far won't even pay for the shipping for a car from Japan to the USA, let alone the import tariffs, the EPA certification, the NHTSA certification, port fees… Much less the car itself.
You could get an EK Type R for say $5500 in Japan. Insured shipping will cost you another $3000, and it will take about 9 months to get it, and cost you another $10,000 (you will likely need a lawyer that knows importation laws). So you would end up spending $20,000 on a car that originally was only worth $15,000.
" I don't have a job yet"
No job and have a whopping 2500 to spend… So you plan to spend that on a car, and where will money for gas, maintenance, insurance, dating girls, and such come from?
You better buy a beater and patiently save save save for a few years.
Don't do it, you are a "broke college student." Have you taken a course in LOGIC yet?
- 2009 Honda Fit JDM Grades? I noticed that although being the same model, 2009 Japanese Honda Fit cars differ slightly. I learned that this is due to the various grades. Can anyone tell me what are the various grades of this particular model? Or where can I look up?
- What type of cool decent not too expensive cars do you recommend for a college freshman? I want a cheap decent car but to be cool and have a weird some unique style, even if it's old model. I can get a honda or toyota 4cylinder but they are too plain and everywhere. I want something cool yet economic and cheap but I don't know A lot of models. I don't mind an old pontiac or buick coupe but I don't know which model and they are not economic right. I don't know ahh probably a stupid civic is all I got.
- What is the best car for a college student? My current car is my dads old Hyundai Tucson 2005, now that I have the money I'm looking for a new better looking car but still reliable and good in snow. current options are: 2014 scion Tc / 2014 Honda civic or 2014 KIA forte koup. Tell me which one you think is better.
- What is a good car for a college student? This is my second year of college and finally going to buy a car! I'm 20 years old, turning 21 in august 11, 2015. I had my license for only a couple of months, like 3 months. Any recommendation? 350z? G35? Honda civic? Mazada 3? Anything that looks nice and appealing. Cheap to insure and pretty face. Thank you! I live in California, Los Angeles. I don't know why I typed pretty face. Just ignore.
