Bought my car brand new, not sure if I have the title?

Sorry if I seem clueless here, i bought my car brand new from a florida honda dealership, I paid in full. I just moved to another state and went to register my car here the day before my registration expired, but realized I didn't have my title. They gave me a temp till the end of the year until I return with my title and smog check certification to finish the registration (already paid for it) It's been a year and a half since I bought my car so my memory is fuzzy but I don't remember ever having it in my possession. While looking for it I did find a paper for an application for title though. Is it possible I haven't had a title this whole time? Can that even happen if the car is registered under my name? Was I supposed to take care of that and never finished it? Help and advice would be appreciated as I'm running out of time to get my registration finished before the temp is no longer valid.

File for abandoned title. When nobody claims the car, the state will cancel the old title and issue a new one for you.

IF indeed you paid for the vehicle in full, the state should have mailed the title to you after you submitted the application - IF you submitted the application. You'll have to contact the Florida DMV with your VIN number and request a duplicate title. You may be required to supply proof of identity, which may require having a notary public verify your i.d. And then fax a confirmation to the motor vehicle dept. If you don't show up in person.

And yes, you seem utterly clueless and stupid since you couldn't even go to the Florida DMV website on your own. Here, https://www.flhsmv.gov/title-faq/ Scroll down down to the part that says "What documentation is required to apply for a duplicate certificate of title when the original has been lost or destroyed?" It's going to cost you $85.

If you purchased the automobile in full from a dealership it was their responsibility to submit the vehicle title application to your state's DMV offices. You should have then received the title directly from the DMV within a month or so.

Did none of this happen? You best talk to the sales manager at the dealership immediately to find out what was, and as not, performed.

Minor problem sometimes- car purchase in one stae to be used in another state may possible NOT be titled in selling state, a 'export' certificate and tax transfer to other state, certificate of origin instead of title and registration issued from dealer in selling state. IF you were Florida resident, probably got Florida Title paperwork- BUT snowbirds that are NOT full time residents of Florida might get paperwork for their 'resident' state title and a 'temp' florida license plate with some fees collected. OR, you just didn't get paperwork to proper office in time. Depends on your legal state of residence at time of purchase, how you were going to register it and told dealer.

I'm calling 100% total BS. You did not buy a brand new car and you did not pay cash and you did not forget if you got the title. One of the 3 maybe, Not all 3.

Do you know if your head is attached to your body? You don't sound too bright.

  • Not sure what to get for my first car? So I'm a senior girl in high school who is about 5'4" and my parents are buying me a car for college. Now I can't get anything fancy like an audi or BMW, but I can get something like honda, hyundai, mazda, ford, etc. I want a car that is fuel efficient and looks good. I don't really want a muscle car or a super sporty car. I'm not sure what exactly what to get.
