Car Accessories Keep Dying While Driving? And it's not the alternator?
I've got a 2003 Honda Element, I was driving it a few weeks ago, and the AC, Radio and interior lights began to shut off while I was driving. I immediately thought it was the alternator. However, I had recently had it worked on, so I checked the cables to make sure that they were secure on the battery. The negative cable was lose, so I tightened it, then jumped it and drove it. I drover it for about 20 minutes then checked the Voltage in the battery to see if the alternator was going out. It read around 14 V while the car was on even with the AC, headlights etc. Which is that of a healthy alternator. Similarly, I got good readings on the battery as well(it's brand new). Assuming it was the bad connection, I drove it for about a week and half before the same problem came up. Things started to die while I was driving. I didn't have time to jump it again and try and address the problem for about a day, so I let it sit. When I went out to jump it today, it started fine without a jump. I drove it on the highway for about 25 minutes without any problems.
I'm a college student and my problem here is that I need to drive the car home(about 120 miles) to have it properly inspected this weekend, however I'm worried that this same problem will occur.
Any thoughts on what the issue may be?
May not be that at all, your ignition switch may be failing to provide power to accessories but, the ignition power is OK. You say things start to die if the voltage is low the engine should die also.
Check the voltage regulator.
Replace the battery terminals. Replace the negative cable and clean the area where the negative cable connects to the chassis. Check the alternator mounting bolts. Loosen then retorque.
No joy, replace the alternator.
- Will buying a newer mower solve my issue with dying while cutting thicker grass? I have an older 6.5 hp Toro and it dies frequently going through tall or thick grass. I bought a brand new Toro with a 190cc 7.25 ft/lb. Torque engine and it had the same problem, perhaps more so. If I spend a little more money (about $400 more than the new Toro) and get the Honda HRX217VKA will it make a difference? It also has a 190cc engine but I've read that the Honda engines are much better.
- I have a 2006 Honda Metropolitan, WHen cold it starts up but i have to keep revving it to keep it going? I have already replaced the battery, air filter, spark plug, did an oil change, got new gas, cleaned out the carb. Once it is warm i have no issues with it. It usually takes about 3 to 4 min of driving it to get it warm but once warm everything is fine with stopping and going.
- Car was extremely low on gas and I stalled while driving slow? Car was extremely low on gas and I stalled while driving slow. I immediately turned off the car. After 3 seconds I turned the switch and the car started and I drove 1 mile to the nearest gas station. My question is was this stall area from low gas? The car didn't do it again drives great. Its a Honda crv 1998 automatic.
