1998 toyota vs 2001 honda?

I'm in between cars and my parents are strongly rooting for one I jus want to know your opinion. 1998 toyota avalon 120+ mileage, 2000$ or 2001 honda civic 120+ mileage also 2000$. Fam is rooting for toyota, what do you think and why?

They are both junks

Go for the civic. It's smaller, it's not too hard or expensive to repair. It's newer, and better on gas. You can't go wrong with Toyota or Honda. But I think you'll like the civic more. The Avalon is on the base of a luxury car, which means more money. Do what you like, but the civic is the winner.

My cousin has a 2001. It's been hit, poorly taken care of, 200, xxx miles and it's STILL his everyday driver.

$2000 not 2000$
toyota, but have both looked by a mechanic, too which is in better shape.

The Honda will get substantially better fuel economy. We just sold my Daughter's '99 Accord with just shy of 300,000 miles on it. I have had two other Hondas that made it to the 300,000 mile mark with nothing but basic maintenance. I currently own two Toyotas, but if I were in the market for a car for my younger daughter, I would go with the Honda if both cars were in similar condition.

I have owned 3 Toyotas and 3 Hondas. All 3 Toyotas ran when I sold them or gave them away and all 3 had nearly 300,000.

All 3 Hondas went to the junk yard or scrap metal. One had nearly 350,000 miles on it, one was T-boned (wrecked) the other was simply worn out with 450,000 miles on it.

My opinion on both are about the same. Your problem is your not comparing apples. Your comparing an apple to a pomegranate.

The Toyota Avalon is a car that yells out to people "look at me, I'm prestigious, arrogant and better than you" while the Honda Civic goes through life doing what a car is suppose to do, transport you from point A to point B and back to A with no fuss or "look at me" attitudes.

Personally, I would go with the Civic. But I'm a practical person and not a show boat. Question is, are you?

Honda Civic

Condition of the specific car matters way more than brand name when they are that old.
