96 Civic EX with B18B1 swapped engine ECU error?

Just bought a 96 Honda Civic with a swapped B18B1 engine. With no check engine light on, took it to a California smog shop to get it tested, it couldn t be read. Car turns on and drives good, has no check engine light on and can't be tested.

I'm not sure what to check for as far as the harness is concerned, which I'm assuming is where the problem is.
Any info, tips or links that could help me troubleshoot this problem would be appreciated.

You made a big mistake! CA law states that any vehicle after 1975 can't have the engine exchanged EXCEPT if the replacement engine is of the same year and size as the OEM engine… You now have 2 choices - either find the correct engine and have it installed, or scrap the vehicle… NO other options

Yes you made one big MISTAKE even paying money for this heap of JUNK. As it will never ever pass a SMOG test.
the engine and it's engine manage meant system are the start of the issues with this car. Not compatible. So time to be just scraping it. And buy a car with it's proper engine in it.

  • Switch to non vtec without an ecu change? I have a 97 honda civic ex vtec with a d16y8 motor that's blown. I want to replace it with a d16y7 that doesn't have vtec since it's cheaper and I hardly use it to go fast anyways. I read everywhere that it won't accelerate past 5000 rpm's if the ecu isn't switched and it will also cause a check engine light. I was wondering if there was an easy way to not have to switch the ecu but not have those problems caused.
