Conversion from auto to manual! Looking for some help if your not a honda person thats cool but please don't write any stupid comments
Hi so i have a 2000 honda civic DX sedan and would like to convert it to a 5spd manual. At the momnet my transmission is starting to give way and i figured there would be no better time to do it than now. I know i could just go buy a manual but i want to convert mine.
I would like to know what parts would i need and from what cars also if any of you guys have done it before. How did you do it and what challenges did you face along with how you fixed those challenges.
Not sure about your specific car, but the short list:
Manual tranny.
Manual ECU.
All manual interior components (shifter, pedal rack).
Clutch master cylinder and plumbing.
Manual tranny mounts and axles.
Flywheel/clutch plate.
Forgetting at least a half dozen things…
Easier to buy another car. Either a perfectly good driver and sell yours, or a wrecked one you can steal all the parts off.
Much cheaper to sell yours and find one with a manual, if you can.
WELL THIS IS GOING TO BE COSTLY.new tranny, clutch assembly.linkage, your going to have to cut a hole in your floor, for the shifter, redo the transmission mounts
The fact that it is a Honda, and a Civic make this so much easier. The things are bullet-proof. There are also so many that if you google "2000 civic transmission swap", the odds of finding a walk-through on a forum are very high. Most likely, the manual transmission will be a direct swap, and the hardest part will be getting the clutch pedal in, and linkages correct, as well as installing the master cylinder. ECU may need to be coded for it to recognize it doesn't have an automatic anymore.
This will be a project for sure. You'll have to install parts and systems that are not part of the automatic transmission equipped versions of this car. You'll have to do some measuring. Things you'll need are shifting mechanism, clutch pedal and mounting hardware along with hydraulics or mechanical linkage to actuate the clutch. Flywheel, clutch and pressure plates. You'll have to check to see if you'll need a new transaxle and axle shafts (sizing differences might apply).
That will cost a whole lot of dough to do a conversion.
Go to the auto GSA auctions in your area. Bid and buy the same year car as yours that has the manual trans. Swap the parts. Having the same car but with the parts you need is the easiest way to get what you need, when you need it.
Probably not worth the trouble unless you're bored and have loads of spare time and cash. I might even use this as an excuse to buy a Civic Si, Integra GSR/Type R, or RSX Type S that isn't beat up if one is available. This is where you go on the forums and get an idea of what bits and pieces you need to make the conversion work. Your biggest problem is probably going to be the ECU. I have a feeling it might not cooperate with you.

- What car looks cool (semi-sporty, sleek) but not too expensive? This will be my first car I like the Honda Civic Is, but that only comes in manual transmission, and it is a little too sporty looking. Are there any sedans (I'm hesitant for a coupe, but if you know of one, please list it. *Honda Civic Si, not "Is". Also I think the rear of the SI is too sporty, not the body

- Is it hard to pull out the engine from a Honda Civic and take it to your apartment if you are an ordinary person? Hi. I want to overhaul my Hoda Civic's engine. But I don't know how heavy it is going to be. I don't have a garage. I live in an apartment. Is it hard to pull it out and took it to the elevator and then to my suit to do all the work? Will it be too heavy? I'm 5-7 and 140 lbs.
