My car won't start. Could it be because of low oil?

For the past two days my car has been giving me some tourble when starting… It sort of does this chug chug chug before it starts and onces its started it keeps chugging for a couple of seconds even stops at times… So i checked under the hood (i'm no car wiz… I only know how to check the very basics) and noticed the oil level was below the bottom dot… Could this be my problem? I have a 99 Honda Civic (is 5w-30 oil ok?)

It could be… Top off oil to safe level and see if it cranks better. Even if it not the problem, is very bad for the motor to have chronically low oil level. That, or your battery may just be too weak to start the car. If it will jumpstart from another car easily and runs fine after that is likely any number of issues tied to the battery.

chug chug chug sounds to me like the sound you get from drained battery. If the batt is more than a few years old, it may just be at the end of its useable life and not able to hold enough charge to get the car started anymore. If its determined to be battery then keep the old battery because you'll get out of the "core" charge by giving the shop you by the new battery from, your old battery… 20 bucks saved right there.

If it's not the problem it will be soon enough if you don't add oil.

Sounds like the car is not getting a good fuel to air mixture. Chugging and stalling is a sign of the mix being off one way or the other. Too much fuel or too little and you can have problems.

Let me guess, you don't take regular maintenance serious. You might have a clogged fuel filter causing low pressure on the fuel rail (if fuel injected). And I don't know enough about your car to have any kind of good idea as to what may be bothering it. But yes, low oil can become a problem. I don't think it's related to your problem, not unless you've spun a bearing or two. If that's the case then it's time for a new motor.

5/30 is fine -if it's that low - you better add 3-4 qts and get it to a mechanic to find the LEAK that you obviously have

Yes 5w 30 is okay for oil weight, one thing i can say that could be the issue is you might just need a tune up ( spark plugs ignition wires cap and rotor) and you can check your spark plugs if they look old or need to be replaced you could not just be getting enough spark for the full tune up not including oil is around 100 give or take and check your oil if you know for sure its low then top it off but don't over fill your oil

Unless your oil was bone dry and seized your motor it would not affect your starting. I would check your battery. 5w-30 is fine as well.
