Rear disc brake vs rear drum brake maintenance (pads vs shoes)?

I just had the REAR brake pads installed at a garage for my 2010 honda civic when they told me that my pads had 2mm left. The work approach done by the "mechanic" appeared similar for the FRONT brake pads replacement done last year at 80,000km.

I also have a 2009 corolla with a REAR drum brake with a front disc brake, with also about 100,000km on it. I replaced the front pads at about 90,000km, but nothing was done to my rear drum brake.

How is a drum brake maintained periodically? Are the drum shoes the most likely item to be replaced, like disc pads?

On a vehicle, the front bakes comprise 2/3's of the braking power and the back brakes only 1/3 of the total braking power. The front brakes wear out twice as fast as the rears because of this, so this is why the rears last twice as long. The only periodical maintenance on drum brakes is to pull the drums off when you rotate the tires to blow the accumulated rust out of them every so often.

I agree with Rolomatic, but also: The rear drum brakes only do about 1/3 of the braking if you adjust them periodically when your front brakes are replaced. If you don't then the 1/3 of the braking starts reducing more and more till the fronts are doing most everything. Keep them adjusted so your brake pedal is higher off the floor.

  • Why do motorbike brake shoes have springs that snap them shut? . When the brake is released? I've taken them off the rear drum brake of my Honda 250 scooter and the brake is much more powerful as I'm not wasting effort overcoming the inertia of the springs. What a silly invention in the first place!
  • How to read the wear indicator groove in disc brake pad, Civic? The groove is now about 1 millimeter deep, so I'm thinking it is time to have my mechanic replace them soon. But I don't know how deep they were to begin with. Not sure if I should keep using these for a while or not. Can anyone tell me the original depth of the groove or whether I should wait or act now? 2006 Honda Civic LX sedan, front wheels.
  • Best rear brake shoes for my 97 Honda Civic HX? I have a 97 civic HX and need to change by rear brake shoes and drums. I was thinking about getting brembo drums and self adjusting hardware kit for each side but I'm looking for the shoes and I wanted to know the best kind I could buy that s built with great quality parts and could compare to ceramic brake pads. I need one that has good stopping power.
