Should I buy an '06 Honda Civic with over 140K miles?
It has 143K miles but it appears to be in great condition. I'm of course going to get it checked out by a a mechanic, but Honda's especially the 8th generation are known to go over 250K miles, no? I only plan to own this car for a few years before getting something newer. I'll be using it for work and school. I don't really drive that many miles a year, less than 9,000.
Added (1). Also the car is priced at $4,700.
Get a mechanic to look at it.
Be advised, buying the first model year of any generation of car is usually not a good idea. The 8th generation Honda Civic had a lot of engine issues in 2006. It's considered one of the least reliable cars of the last few decades.

The first model year of a car brand is generally less reliable than the second or third because after a redesign, usually new problems are surfaced as Honda works out the kinks. By the second or third year, the issues are usually worked out. Consider the 2002-2005 generation of Civic (avoid the '01) or the 2003-2008 generation of Corolla. Both of these cars are pretty dated by today's standards, but they are both rock solid cars. Or look for an '07 or newer Cviic.
Too many people have this idea that ANY Honda or Toyota will last over 250K miles. Look at that list and count how many Hondas and Toyotas are on there - it's surprisingly quite a few. My sister had a '02 Toyota RAV4 that had boatloads of issues - she only kept it until '08 and bought a Prius (which was pretty reliable, even though she beat the hell out of it).
I'd move on and find something else - or at least get it inspected before you buy it to see if it has these issues.
- I have a 1998 Honda CRV with 240 K miles. Needs $1200 of repair to pass inspection. Should i fix or buy a newer used Honda civic? Mike? I'm the original owner and have done a good job with oil changes etc. However, it needs 2 front control arms with ball joints and rear struts to pass inspection. I've also gone past my mileage on a second timing belt (first one done at 90K miles). Car body exterior and interior is in pretty good shape. Inside looks brand new. But repair cost at 1200 + timing belt ~500 =~1700 in repars. Is it time for a newer used auto.
- I'm planning to buy 2005 Honda CRV, with 140K miles on it, how much worth do you think? It looks in a clean condition. @Lan K, the vehicle looks clean, inside out, clean title, and timing belt and water pump has been changed. He was asking $7000, and Now he come down to $5,600.
- Should I buy this 2008 Honda Civic LX for $5,299 (price is negotiable and it has 163,000 miles)? Per the owner, it's been well maintained (I will get an auto shop to inspect it to confirm that). I see a lot of honda civics for sale now, so I do not understand why so many are for sale since they are reliable. Should I buy this vehicle?
- Should I buy a 2008 honda civic ex-l that has 100000 miles or a honda civic lx that has 82k miles? The honda civic ex-l has only one owner and the honda civic lx is from a dealer. They're fairly the same price
