Stage 2 street clutch break in?
Got a 1998 honda civic EX coupe that came with a new clutch that just needed to be installed. I researched the clutch and found out that the new clutch is a stage 2 XTC street clutch. After I had it installed (by a mechanic of course) he said that the new clutch will ride a little rough until you break it in. I know that the manufacturer suggests a 500-mile break-in, but the car sputters a bit at take off unless I get the rpms to between 3-4k. Even then its a bit hard. The mechanic did warn me that for break in time would be a little sensitive and to take it easy because the new clutch is a 6-finger plate. My only question is this: "Is it true that because of the nature of this clutch and its design/ purpose that my take offs are a little cumbersome and rocky and that it will ease up after the break in period is finished? OR has my clutch been installed improperly and need further servicing? I'm afraid to drive it too extensively for fear of causing further damage."
First go google what stage two parts actual are. This will save time for me to type all of it. A stage 2 isn't street friendly and requires extra parts beyond the clutch to work reliably. They are a hard clutch to get right since they grab so tight. The OEM or even stage 1 is kinda forgiving. Stage two is usually rated for a car with 500hp or more and a good 400 ft lbs of torque. Most stage two you literally dump the clutch but here you can't because your flywheel may shatter or you will destroy the tranny. Before with the OEM clutch was the weak link slipping and sliding along with the motor and wheels NOW the clutch is so strong that the next thing to take the abuse is the flywheel and the motor and tranny. You do have a break in period to marry the clutch and flywheel but you can't drive it like a normal car the clutch grabs to tight and to quick to feather it in. A good stage 2 is also a heavy clutch feels like you are trying to press a cinder block into concrete so good luck with stop and go traffic. You can learn to use the clutch and its personality but it takes time. I repalced the WRX clutch with a stage 1 and it took a good week to get even a basic start right. I drove it for more than 5 yrs at this point. So it will ease up a bit but don't go racing any time soon I can promise if not the first ten times but number eleven the flywheel will shatter.
- WHAT STREET RACE CAR SHOULD I GET? I'm a girl and i'm really into cars. I'm getting a car and don't know what i should get. Can someone give me some examples of some good cars i can totally modify under 8k… No lame hondas please or rx8 since they break down too easily. I preffer a manual over a automatic. I was looking mostly at the wrx sti subies. But what are some others that look good. I don't want anything too old or ugly looking. What do you think about an acura integra? Or a rx7?
