Title for my car from a different state?
So here s the situation. I purchased a used car for short money a couple days ago through a private sale. The bill of sale told me it was a 1999 Honda civic, however when I run the VIN I come to find out it is actually a 2000. I purchased a report from what I have been told is a reputable vin check website which has told me there's no theft report, lien, or accident reports. It also told me there's a current title in New York state. I purchased the car in New Hampshire, and it even had a nh state inspection sticker for last year with the correct VIN and the mileage marker reads about 3k less than the odometer which seems accurate given that this is a sticker from a little under a year ago. Is this even possible to have it titled in new York but registered in New Hampshire? How may I obtain the title so I can register my new to me car and enjoy the first car I bought with my own money? And believe me, I have learned my lesson, so please no telling me what I did wrong with this purchase and how I could have done it better, I understand that and own the mistake. From now on I will always check the VIN and ask for more documentation than what I received this time around. Please anyone who can lead me in the right direction here pass on any information you can that might be of assistance.
You can't register a car without a title, you can't get a copy of the title unless your the "titled" owner, see the vicious little circle here.
You need to have your local dmv assist you, I believe they will tell you to get a notified letter from the seller to the effect that they have sold the car to you. If you can't contact the seller then you are really stuck.
You should ALWAYS receive the title when purchasing a car. The fact that the"seller" didn't provide one may mean that that person didn't actually own it in the first place.
You should contact the NH and NY DMV to find it which issued the most recent title, and then apply to the appropriate state to obtain a duplicate title, if that's even possible. If the seller wasn't on the title, the car still belongs to whoever IS on the current title.
It would be highly unusual for NH to register a vehicle and then not issue a new title as well. Be honest with them, as they may be the only ones who can truly help.
You have not purchased anything. To purchase a car means to pay the person who has the title and get the title from that person. All you did was to give someone money, but it probably wasn't the person with the title, and the person definitely didn't give you the title, so the payment is just a gift, not a purchase. You can't get the title in your name, because it's not your name.
The car still belongs to the person in the other state who has the title.
If you want the title, then you'll have to buy it from the person in the other state who has the title.
- How to title a motorbike that has no title or bill of sale? I have a Honda CT70 that was purchased at an auction many years ago. I do not have a bill of sale and the bike was never titled because it was never street legal. I would like to restore it and get it titled to ride around town. Any help is appreciated. And I live in Wisconsin as well.
