What ac compressor should i buy?

My car compressor has failed for my honda civic 2006 and i'm in need of a replacement. Does buying at autozone give me an advantage, despite the prices being $250+ or should i buy one online for 100+?

If you are fixing it yourself, get one from a junkyard out of a Civic.

Hi no not in makes like honda. In fact it might be the worse idea ever.

It won't matter. Since the AC compressor failed it means you have to flush the entire system, replace the expansion valve, and hope no debris got into the condenser. You'll need a vacuum pump and gauges.

Car A/C compressors that fail internally, and not just the clutch or clutch bearing, spew small shards of metal particles into the system. Because of the extra small passageways in the condensers of R-134a systems, most, but not all, of those particles remain in the condenser and are near impossible to flush out successfully. The receiver/dryer will catch most of the rest.
So for you to have a successful, long lasting compressor replacement, the condenser, expansion valve, and receiver/dryer need to be replaced with new ones. The high pressure line(s) can be either flushed out or replaced, and the compressor can be either a new one or a low mileage used one.
After it's all reassembled, pull a vacuum on the system for 30 minutes, charge the refrigerant according to weight, and you'll be good to go.
I've had good luck with low mileage used compressors from places like Parts Market & eBay, but have also found brand new factory compressors for $100, on places like eBay too.
Good luck.
To add; While buying a compressor from an auto parts store is sometimes more expensive, their service is faster and if there's a defect, it can be fixed much quicker.

  • How much should I pay to replace the AC compressor on a 2010 Honda Odyssey? The air conditioning on my wife's minivan recently went out. I had her take it to a mechanic expecting a refill situations costing less than $100. When they got back to us they said the clutch would not engage on the AC and it required replacement costing over 1100 dollars. I've seen the part online for $250 to 450. How much is reasonable to pay for this repair? Would I be better off buying the part online and having someone else install it? I'm told the job is about 3 hours.
  • How often should a car's AC compressor need to be replaced? We have a 2007 Honda CRV with 120,000 miles on it. The AC compressor system just failed. I feel like that's too soon for a 7 year old car. I've had cars for 10-15 years and never had that happen. How often should that happen?
