Buy Honda

Honda Civic, it has a combined mileage of 34 mpg vs. The Cooper at 29.

The real big difference is the Cooper uses premium gas instead of regular, premium is obviously more expensive.

ETA: I would go with the Civic, it will probably have better resale value and you just can't beat a Honda for reliability.

You ar missing the point here. What you will really save money on if you go with the Honda is maintenance. Minis are unreliable pieces of junk.

they are very close to the same, and neither are diesel which give you another 10 miles peg gallon, and on that, not sure where this is i US or UK, that price for the gallon or litre weigh in as well,

where "2$ for a gallon" versus "1$ for litre x 4 ", plus weather conditions colder means more heating and fuel consumption, same with hot region and air conditioning,

you want to save money on gas, get a motorcycle, you want safer vehicle, get a volvo, all wheel drive or subaru, If he's a techy, see if he wants to build a hover bike or drone instead, (no insurance though)

so diesel may be cheap fuel, or electric, but pricey for the value

The difference includes the fact that the Honda is an inexpensively priced quality compact car, while the Mini is a premium priced lifestyle piece of junk.

In audio terms, it's like the difference between JBL and Bose speakers. Only idiots buy the lifestyle product, smart people buy the GOOD product.
