Why won't my car warm up fast?

I have a 2016 Honda civic, which i recently purchased.

As soon as i start the car the RPM need goes up above 1,000. After 5 minutes or so the needle drops below the 1000 mark, but the temp needle won't move. The 2018 malibu we have doesn't have this issue, takes about 3-5 before the needle starts moving,

Could it be that the thermostat is stuck open and not letting the engine get to operating temp fast or is it normal for it to take a long time? I've never owned a Honda before so i don't know if its normal.

Once it warms up, the gauge doesn't drop fast, stays at a constant unless i don't use it for a while and it cools down.

Did you at least tale the radiator cap off to see if there radiator was full of coolant?
You car should warm up with in 5 minutes of driving.
The first thing to do in this situation if the radiator is full is to replace the thermostat.

You have 2 options to find out the issues (1) do the work yourself after getting a repair manual or (2) have a shop do the work

I think the thermostat has failed open or has been removed. Feel the upper radiator hose as it warms up. It should stay pretty cold until the engine reaches operating temperature, then rather quickly become hot. If it gradually warms up the thermostat is not doing its job.

Yes sounds exactly like a thermostat failure.

You are comparing a Honda to a Chevy. There's no fix for that. The engine has to reach operating temperature to be efficient if it doesn't it should set a check engine light. Heat at the vents should be at least 120-140 degrees. The temp gauge should be about half or in the normal range around 200 degrees. If you want it to warm up faster try a block heater.

  • Have a 09 Honda 100cc dirtbike and it sounds bogged down and won't go very fast? I was riding and I accidentally downshifted. White smoke then came out of the exhaust and now it just sounds bogged down and won't go very fast at all.
  • 2001 Honda CR-V A/C will blow cool for 15-30 min then go warm? My 2001 Honda CR-V has 170,000 miles and it blows fairly cold air for the first 15-30 minutes but then gets warm until I let the car sit for a few hours. I have not checked the cabin filter yet since on this series of CR-V it is the hardest one I have had to get to, so wanted to ask first. Do you think it is that? Also, it doesn't sound like the compressor turns on or off if that makes a difference.
  • Why won't my car won't start after putting in gas? I have a 2007 civic, 80,000 miles, about a year old battery. Yesterday after I filled up the gas tank my car wouldn't start. Waited about 1 minute and it started fine. This had happened about 4 months ago (I had it checked at Honda) and they said it was okay. But today I went a short distance (15 minutes from home left the car for about 5) and my car didn't want to start. What could it be?
  • Why does my honda Civic heater just blows somewhat warm air? I have a 98Civic Lx and the heater use to work great about a month ago it use to blow hot air to when it would be to hot but now it just blows warm air but mostly cold what can be the problem, the fuses are good!
