What is proper tire pressure for most passenger cars?
I stop at quick lube for oil change- they say air pressure it too high… Maybe 35 -38 pounds. They lower it to 30.
Then I look on the tire and it says max press- 51 pounds!
What is it supposed to be?
Honda CRV…
Added (1). Okay- thanks for all the info. I got it now.
30 on the Honda…
On the old Volvo V70 its 32 front and 30 rear up to 500# weight of cargo and passengers.
And 38 all the way around for 500-1000#
Thats all cold tire pressure.
Most passenger car tires are supposed to be around 33-36psi. It's clearly written on the side of the tire.
MAX Pressure is the same as what the tires PSI SHOULD BE. You should never inflate your tires to the MAX Pressure unless you want them to explode when you hit a bad bump or a minor pothole.
The recommended tire pressure is written on the drive side door pillar on modern cars. Common tire pressure is around 32 psi.

Pay attention to Kenny and Nick N Ame. Use the car manufacturers' recommended pressures. You can overinflate them a little bit without harm, as long as you don't exceed the maximum printed on the tire sidewall.
The tire pressure on the sticker on the driver's door or the door jam - NOT the max pressure for the tire you bought
The tire pressure on the door is the correct pressure when the tires are cold or have been driven less than a mile. If you've driven it for a while and heated the tires up the pressure will increase. NEVER let a quickie lube joint drop the air pressure after you've been driving. Get a good tire pressure gauge and check them first thing in the morning at least once a month. If their at less than what the door sticker calls for then right down how much needs added to each and check them again when you get to a place where you have an air source so you can raise the pressure reading at that time by the proper amount. Two or three PSI over the recommended won't hurt.
Here's how to find the right pressure

The MAX pressure on the sidewall is just for when mounting a tire and has nothing to do with the pressure you should have them set at!
The tire pressure spec. Lane is under your drivers door latch… READ IT.
"Then I look on the tire and it says max press- 51 pounds! "
That's the max pressure of what the tire can physically take before imminent failure becomes a concern. This is *not* the recommended tire pressure.
The car's manufacturer, not the tire manufacturer determines the proper tire pressure. Usually this information is located on the data placard/label located on the door jamb, or on the inside of the fuel door, or on older cars in the inside of the the glove box. Typically 30-35 psi is common. When in doubt 33psi is a safe pressure to go with for passenger cars if you don't know what the exact pressure should be. Chances are you're not going to be more than 3 psi off in either direction. For trucks, tire pressures vary wildly, with some using similar pressures as cars but others using much higher pressures (50+ psi).
Check your owners manual or the sticker on the drivers door jam for recommended pressures. Most manufacturers suggest anything between 28-32 lbs.
- Punctured tire replacement - can I replace only 1 tire - is it safe to replace the PUNCTURED tire only? My 2005 Honda Pilot rear left tire was punctured near the threshhold (ie - sidewall), but still usable. Thus the tire dealer patched it only. Should I replace that punctured tire only? Or should I replace the 2 tires on the same axle? Or even buy a whole set of 4 tires? I'm concerned about safety, and thus your best advice is very appreciated.
- Honda Shadow Aero, Recommended tire pressure? I have a 2007 Honda Shadow Aero 750, What is the recommended tire pressure for this? It shows I have 10 psi in the front which looks to be impossible. Because it is not flat or even close when parked and when sat on. (I'm 300 pounds, I think it would droop. And the back says I have 25. How much do I need?
