When should i use overdrive?

I have a 2000 honda crv, its a 2.0 L 4 cylinder car, its underpowered for its body but it gets around pretty well, i get terrible gas mileage for what it is, I live in a pretty hilly area and my rpms are constantly shifting up and down, should i turn off overdrive when going through these hills to conserve gas?

Always

Lock-out/turn-off the overdrive in any condition that makes it "hunt", or frequently shifting in-and-out of OD… That puts an extra strain on the engine & trans trying to maintain speed up hills. Depending on make/model - sometimes good idea to lock-out OD in heavy traffic where it also hunts and can cause car to lunge forward at low speeds.

When going up steep inclines tuning OD off helps keep the rpm's up and the motor running better so it doesn't drop below 2,000 rpm and bog down. Bogging down the motor causes carbon build up in the cylinder heads.
All Honda motors have a common problem with tight valves. They need to be adjusted every 60,000 miles. If not adjusted you'll end up with bad gas mileage, a poor idle, and may cause you to need a valve job.

Going up hill turning it off may help but not down hill.

Every day

Never in an aeroplane.

Hi so the reason why the poor mileage has more to do with age and wear in the engine than anything else. The over drive if fitted is now not going to make things any better

You can lockout overdrive. But It's not going to to improve your fuel economy.
