Why does my 1997 crv RPM jumps up and down?

My honda crv's rpm jumps up and down at random times on drive, park, or even when the engine is turned off. At the same time, the car would stall when driving (even at around 60-70+ mph) stepping on the car pedal and revving the car would stabilize the stalling. At low speed, 0-30mph, the car would stall and die. I can't figure out the problem! I bought new spark plugs, new distributor cap and coil (except the distributer itself) what can it be?

Check your timing

The check engine light must be on. Have the ECU scanned to retrieve the code that has been set. This code will tell you what part is being effected and where to start looking. It can be many things and the code will tell you where to begin.

It sounds like a ignition system problem to me.It may be a defective component or you may have a short in one of the wiring harnesses connected to a ignition component.Erratic tach movement is usually a shorted or loose wire connection. Check all your connections for a tight fit and check for the presence of corrosion too on any of your ignition components.Distributer, ignition module, coil, and crank position sensor(if your vehicle has one) As a matter of fact, a defective crank sensor is the most likely cause for intermittent shutdown like you're experiencing. The ignition module is another likely suspect.Autozone can test the ignition module if you remove it and carry it to them. You are definitely experiencing a intermittent loss of power to one of these ignition components.Go online and locate a wiring diagram for your ignition system so you can see which wires go from the tach and into the engine bays wiring harness that's tapped into the ignition system. It will help troubleshoot.
