New or Used Car? Honda Fit?
Adult first time car buyer. Scared to get a lemon if buy used, but could save at least 4K over the same model new. Will not be driving it a lot, but need it to go outside a 10 mile radius of where I live.
Does the cost of repairs on used car outweigh the initial price saving? Want to keep the car up to 10 years if it rides well.
Does mileage over 80,000 for a Honda Fit mean the car is on it's last legs, what's a good mileage range for it as a used car?
If maintained well, what's the life expectation of the Honda fit mileage wise up? I.e. If buy 80,000 will it die at 120,000?
How to find a good mechanic to inspect the car and how to logistically get the car inspected since don't have car insurance to drive the car to a mechanic by self (have no-one with insurance to drive the car to the mechanic with me if dealer would let me take it off the lot)?
What fees other than the price of the car are there and what is the price range for those fees?
When negotiating the price (not the monthly payments) do you negotiate the price of the car before taxes and fees or are you negotiating the entire cost including taxes & fees?
Is there a business or service you can pay to do the leg work of finding a used car and getting it inspected for you if you tell them your price range?
People tend to forget that depreciation is your biggest enemy when buying a car. What makes you think new cars and lemons are mutually exclusive? Not all cars are made equal when they roll off the assembly line. Many automakers' attitudes towards paying out warranty claims - now that's a lemon. A Honda Fit should be able to get you to 150,000 miles and beyond without any expensive repairs provided it's been properly taken care of. Quality control seems to have been decent for the model. As for mechanics, ask for a recommendation from your friends or other car owners. This should point you in the right direction. Once you find a car you want to buy, get the mechanic to come to you or arrange a trip to the shop. To avoid dealer fees and markups, buy from a private seller. You'll need to pay for registration and sales tax as well as insurance which you should arrange before hand. There's no point of having someone find a car for you when you've got to test drive it anyway.

My 2002 Honda Civic is suddenly having a lot of problems - SRS dash light always on, AC doesn't work, squeaking and thumping underneath on front passenger's side and brake pedal, and passenger side mirror is loose.
