I just changed the oil but not the oil filter. Will it damage the engine?

I used Mobil 1 Synthetic and Bosch Distance Plus oil filter last oil change, which was 10,000 miles ago. I drained the oil and filled it back with Mobil 1 Synthetic but didn't change the filter because I couldn't get it off.

I normally do an oil change every 10,000 miles. So will going 20,000 miles with the same filter cause damage to the engine?

What's weird is Honda recommends changing the oil filter every other oil change, which would be every 20,000 miles. So I guess I'm doing what Honda recommends.

You should be ok but in the future ALWAYS change the filter with the oil…

I disagree, because the filter is what catches the dirt and not changing it in my opinion is the same as not changing the oil. Filters and oil are cheap compared to a new motor, air filters too.

You'll be fine, just change it next time

I agree with alan. Its highly unlikely that not changing the filter this one time will actually cause damage. I would just make sure to keep changing the filter in the future

Frankly speaking, it will not actually damage the engine without replacement. Just clean it simplly, if you can't get out of anxiousness

Once the filter clogs it goes into bypass mode and stops filtering. You're going to have to change it eventually. Why risk extra engine wear by trying to squeeze extra life out of it? Buy a better filter wrench and change it As soon as possible.

FULL FLOW FILTERS:

Filters like this are full flow. That is, when they clog, the oil takes a path around the filter.

So, a dirty filter is like having no filter at all. This could result in dirty oil, and that could damage vital engine parts (grinding away at your cam lobes and cupping your hydraulic lifters and wearing away the bearings on your connecting rods). A dirty filter might also "slightly" contaminate the new oil.

PARTIAL FLOW FILTERS:

The Franz Miracle Oil Filter uses a roll of toilet paper. It is a partial flow filter. That is, a stream of oil is diverted from the main oil flow of the pump, and that flows through the filter. When the Franz filter clogs, oil bypasses it. The Franz filter works well, but it is messy to change the roll of toilet paper, and sometimes the gaskets leak.

SUGGESTION:

Change the filter as soon as you can. You can do it yourself with an oil filter wrench.
