The VR in your alternator will not stop your motor running until the battery gets to a point below the level your engine management system requires to operate.
If there's 80 volts being developed your wire systems will be in danger of melt down!

Yes, it is probably the voltage regulator. Disregard the uninformed answer from the Tiger. The high voltage will probably not melt any wires, it is high current (amperage) that does that because excessive current generates heat. However, high voltage can damage components like capacitors and resisters inside electronic modules, as well as bulb filaments in lights and indicators. Do not run the bike again until the problem is fixed.
