Are sport bikes a lot slower than super sport?

I used to have a honda cbr250 but sold it to pay for college. I want to get another bike after I graduate.

I was looking at the Honda Cbr500R and the Honda 600RR. Obviously the super sport has a 100cc bigger engine, but is it a lot faster than the 500R? Even more so than you would expect with the 100cc increase due to gear ratio's etc etc?

It's not just about a little bigger engine size. The CBR 600 is whole different kind of bike, really more at home on the track than the street. The CBR 500 is a general-purpose bike, a compromise between all different kinds of riding. The 600 has something like 125 hp but you have to keep it revved up close to the redline to get the power out of it. The 500 probably has 50 hp, but it has a wider power range so it's easier to ride. Plus a more comfortable seat and riding position. Plus less sensitive steering.

The 600 probably has a top speed like 130 or 140 mph (I'm guessing. It could be 150). But really how often do you have the opportunity to go that fast on a motorcycle? The 500 probably tops out around 100 (again guessing). But the 500 will still accelerate faster than most cars!

They are two different bikes with two different purposes.

The 500 is an intermediate learner's bike and the 600 is a supersport.

The difference in top speed is around 65mph and the 600 has almost twice the HP of the 500. They are not comparable bikes.
