Can I make my 100cc dirt bike street legal in texas?
I have a 2003 honda xr 100r and want to make it road legal mostly to ride around and get to trails and also as a fun cheap bike to ride around with friends. I understand it's small and I wouldent be rideing it on the highway or anything. I know I need a horn, high low beams, tailight and dot tires, but is it legal to d though it's only 100cc? Don't say I should just get another bike beacuse i'm stuck with this one and can't afford to buy another
If you can't afford another bike then you probably can't afford all the work it will take to make that bike legal.
Head and tail light with brake, turn signals with markers horn, key ignition, and the fun part, a complete new electrical system with a battery, charging system and switches to support it all.
That's not to even mention the tires, a speedometer and street legal exhaust.
You're talking about a fair amount of money just in parts and some decent electrical skills to set it all up.
Cheaper to get a used dual-sport, dude.
http://www.texasoffroad.net/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/32647/street_legal_dirtbike shows a bit more. You need to call your local DMV. I called many places and finally ended up talking to someone in registration(not in the DMV). It was too many calls. I build a 49cc motorized bike and heard conflicting information as to the legality of riding it on the street. One place says it can't be registered so it can't be insured so it's illegal. Blah blah blah. Finally figured out I don't need anything. Even talked to a few officers from the sheriff's dept. Here in Texas after I had it built and on the road and they liked the bike. Never once have I gotten pulled over. So in the end the calls I made and the final word helped me so make the call about the engine.
