Daily drive motorcycle vs car cost to operate?

I currently drive a 70s honda motorcycle. I put 400 into the bike got new tires, chain sprockets brakes an a battery i pay about 200 a year for insurance and the bike cost about 1200. I'm looking at would a car be cheaper to operate. I can buy a older toyota camry for 2k with 170k miles an insure for 100 a month liability. Gas mileage would be the same in the camry so i'm looking at would a car hold up longer with less maitance cost. The downfall is the car cost anothr 900 a year in insurance but the bike requires work more often.

The government publishes a number for tax purposes of the TOTAL cost to own & operate a car. I haven't seen that in a couple years, but it WAS around 55 cents a mile. It should be on the I.R.S. Web site…

Your bigger question might be how the motorcycle is going to serve your needs if you have to carry groceries on it, or how are you going to stay dry when it's raining and you have to get to work. How about if you and your girl want to go to a fine restaurant? Is she willing to ruin her dress to ride on the back of the motorcycle?

A car will get worse mileage by the simple fact that it is heavier. You have already put a lot of money into the motorcycle, and an older car, even a Toyota, is going to wear out as fast as the motorcycle. Toyotas are notorious for having a higher cost to repair than vehicles like Chevrolets or Fords. But your 70s honda is more dangerous to ride, especially if you are on highways.

A car is typically more expensive to own and operate - but if you can find a good deal on a used car (and it doesn't break down every time you look at it wrong), then it doesn't have to be that much more expensive.

A car costs lots more.

$100 a month Liability? Sure that isn't Comp? My liability is $58.

Motorcycles cost more, unless you have a very short commute. Tires cost about $241 each, unless a very small bike ( you do Not give displacement-!), or you have a cheap source of half worn tires and a machine. Batteries are $50-over $200. Unless a glass mat type, last only 3 years. Only one year if Chinese. Motorcycle repair is a specialty and cost$. I do almost all my work at home. Unless you have a windshield, you can Freeze your a** off, too. In my locale, a leather jacket can cook you like a hot dog at a red light in these 109 degree summers.

An older Corolla/Camry is a bargain, any mechanic can fix it If it breaks; most motorcycles need chain/belt tightening/valve adjustments etc, regularly. Tires are reasonable and can last 50K. My Tercel gets 43-50 MPG; my Night Hawk got 52 at the best. My H/D gets 30-47. Plus, I have to gas her up 3X a week. She really Needs premium, too. The Toyota can run on regular.

Post this under "motorcycles" and you will be get more, accurate answers as to True cost of riding v. An old Toyota. Motorcycles are false economy; only tiny 250 cc get that 75 MPG.

The big issue for someone like myself and where I live is the climate. I love riding my motorcycle but realistically I can only ride it up to maybe 8 months of the year. Winter weather ( snow and ice ) don't make for a very fun ride.

Operating costs are about the same for my car vs. Bike. I pay more for insurance and fuel on my car but the motorcycle maintenance costs ( based on annual mileage ) are much higher.

Lots of money

Do you use your bike when it's raining out? You must live where it's warm all year long. I'd prefer to have a cheap car for back up.
