Honda CX500 dies while riding with a full tank of gas
I have a 1982 Honda CX500 with 53,000 miles on it, yes its a lot of miles but the bike is in amazing condition. Ok, now dropping the sales pitch, yesterday and a few days ago i was out riding and my bike started to lose power in fifth gear at 55 mph. I shifted down to fourth gear and it continued to lose its power till it just died forcing me to pull the clutch and use my momentum to ride to the side of the road. Now i have a full tank of gas, and the fuel valve is pointing at the on position, not res. After a few minutes of pushing the start button and pulling the choke in and out it starts back up and rides fine for the rest of the day. What can i do and start checking? I'm a car mechanic so i know my way around an engine.
I had a similar problem years ago with a cb750 nearly drove me insane. Turned out the breather in the filler cap was blocked. Next time it happens open the gas cap and see if there's any suction, if there's the breather will be blocked… Hope this helps.
Only when it has a full tank I'm betting something if stopping up the fuel tank vent and it is pulling a vacuum.
Next time it happens open the fuel cap. If it starts up right away or doesn't stall out you know that's what it is.
You're a car mechanic.
Haven't you ever heard of an ignition coil to stop working when it gets hot?
Then when it cools down, it will work again.
Keep a known working spark plug with you when riding.
If the bike dies out again, immediately pull off the spark plug caps and check for spark.
Unfairly called the Plastic Maggot they were & are a very good bike. Most likely cause as others have posted are blocked fuel tank vent or tired ignition coils. Also possibly the vac operated fuel valve on the tank is acting up.
A loss of power when hot can be a partial seizure due to insufficient piston to bore clearances or lack of oil flow - extremely unlikely on a bike that mileage.
