Where should i begin my motorcycle restoration?
I'm preparing to restore my 85 honda atc200x, however it has many issues that need repair and need input on where to start. I have had the bike 2 years and have rode it very much before this.
The forks need new seals because one is leaking a ton of oil. The carburetor need a new bowl gasket, so i'm going to order a rebuild kit.
The top clamp on the triple tree is striped on top where the handle bar clamps bolt down.
The axle carrier also needs new bearings
Also should i rebuild the motor or continue to run it as is?
The motor has good compression and does not smoke.
If you are restoring it, strip everything off of the frame. Prep the frame and paint it. Start grabbing parts. If it is bad, fix it or replace it and put it on the frame. With stripped bolts, if the metal around the hole is thick enough, drill the hole out to the next size bigger and tap it. If your engine has good compression, I would not rebuild it at this point.
Are you restoring or just repairing it to the level you can safely ride it?
If restoring you will probably need to strip it to the frame. Remove large sections at a time (like fork assembly) and keep the parts in marked up boxes and baggies. Once you have it all apart decide how you are going to get the parts refurbished - plating, painting, powder-coating, etc - find local suppliers with good reputations and shortish schedules (obviously the best will have longer schedules because they have more work).
If the engine runs without problems just give it a clean and a service, oil, filters, plugs, valve gaps etc.
I would rehab it, not restore it. You can get virtually everything you need from ebay. Start with the bearings, If you can tackle that, then you are golden. Go for the top clamp and do those bearings while you have the forks ect apart to do the seals. Have fun with it, it's going to last you years. If the engine is not smoking and has good compresh, leave it alone.
Lets start off by saying an atc200x is a three wheeler, not a motorcycle.
I would start by getting it in good running condition.
Repair the carburetor.
The engine has good compression and doesn't smoke - I would leave it alone until problems arise.
You can't ride it without rear bearings, repair that next.
Repairing the leaking fork seals should be last on the list.
