What's a good starter motorcycle similar to the Honda Rebel?

I'm 5'10, and weigh 150 pounds. I like the honda rebel, but i realize that it may be too small for me. I want a good looking, easy to ride, starter bike that has freeway capabilities.

Don't get the rebel.it is one cylinder and air cooled. Get a honda VLX 600.2 cylinder.water cooled.great bike. I bought one for a friend in 1988. She is still riding it. She even pulled my 1200 goldwing with cargo trailer behind one day when my stator quit. While on holidays

Many will tell you that a 250 is not freeway capable. BULL! I weigh 200 pounds, ride a Vespa LX150 -- a 150.46cc 11.7bhp "Twist-and-Go" scooter -- and I ride the freeways of Los Angeles and tour on the Interstates. I admit I can only do 60-65 mph, but I know that a 250 can do 70-75 mph *easy*.

The Rebel is a small cruiser, a parallel twin. Yamaha's little cruiser is the 250 V-Star, a v-twin. The engine is longer front/rear and thus the V-Star is a bit longer and a bit more room for a 5'10" rider -- http://cycle-ergo.com/

That Rebel will take you at highway speeds easily.

There's also the Suzuki S40, single cylinder 650cc, if you don't think a 250 will work (it will, but it's your bike).

Even a Honda Shadow 750 is not too much bike, even for a beginner.

  • What's a good starter motorcycle? I've rode dirtbikes since I was 5 and I just realized I turn 16 in 20 days. So I worked all summer to get a car but f*** a car, is rather get a bike. I have about $2000 that I want to put toward a motorcycle. I really want something lower in cc like around 250cc. I want name brand no Chinese junk. I wanted a something like a cbr or a ninja but my parents say it's a death trap. So what we narrowed it down to is the honda shadow style bikes. What are some other bikes like that?
  • What is the most appropriate motorcycle jacket for someone who rides honda rebel as his first bike? I personally like those nylon looking jackets like revit touring types I guess as oppose to sportier looking ones but really is there a good versatile one for my situation?
  • What is a good starter vintage motorcycle? I'm looking for my first vintage bike (70's-80's) I want to start with something cheap, Honda cl350 perhaps? I do want something that had been known for reliably. I also happen to like the look of lowered handlebars. Is their a name for this? Can any bike adapt with this mod?
  • Should I get an 87 Honda rebel for 1500 or a 15 Honda rebel for 4100? Both will have same insurance rate. I know the older one will have more problems to fix but is cheaper up front while the newer one cost more now but will have less problems in the future. Also in case you are wondering the 87 is a 450cc and the 15 is a 234cc.
