Should I get a higher end care for a first car?
Well first off my family is pretty well off but nothing special. My mom drives an Infiniti QX50 and my dad drives an Cadillac Escalade. So I have been exposed to the higher end cars and drive. I'm 16 and I'm looking into the Mercedes C230, Mini Cooper, and a Saab convertible. What do you think is the best? I'm all on my own for parts, gas, maintence, etc. My sisters finace has lots of connections in the mechanic world so I feel like I could get some savings. My budget is like a max of $10,000-$12,000. I WILL NOT DRIVE A HONDA, TOYOTA, OR, CHEVY, I wouldn't even be caught dead in one…
There's absolutely nothing wrong with driving a vehicle from any of the manufacturers you supposedly despise.
As mentioned by the first post, you will be on a learning curve the first few years of driving and that inexperience makes you more likely to be involved in a collision. Until you have gained real world experience, a more basic vehicle would be my recommendation.
Look at maintenance costs. Having owned and maintained all of them, I can tell you that American cars are cheaper to maintain than German ones, and German are cheaper than Japanese. If it's a first car and you want to save money, the obvious choice would be to get an American car.
Another consideration is that you're only 16, and don't have much driving experience. This brings up two important considerations: 1. The harder to drive your first car is, the more valuable experience you'll gain and the easier and less trouble you will have in future cars. So get a stick-shift minivan. That's what my sister learned in, and she's now one of the best drivers I know. 2. The uglier your first car is, the less attached to it you'll be, and the easier it will be to give up if you make a mistake and wreck it.
Even though you may be responsible and pretty good at driving, it's still likely that you'll crash some time, just from lack of experience. I made a mistake and crashed, within my first year of driving, but my car was nothing special and so I didn't care that much about the huge dent in the back of it, and eventually I got something I liked more. Since it is your first car, you'll probably have some emotional attachment to it, but hopefully you realize, from a logical standpoint, it's silly to get attached to a car. So, if you get something you don't like, you'll be more willing to part with it when the time comes that it makes financial sense to do so. Therefore, that's what I recommend.
Whatever model you decide on, ask your mechanic acquaintances if it is easy to maintain and repair. Probably every model has some quirk that is difficult, but some are worse than others.
