Advice for an Electrical Engineering drop out?
So I'm proud to say I made it all the way to linear algebra -one class beyond diff eq. I took all the calc based physics I needed & all that circuit jazz. Today might be my last day. Looking around, there wasn't a lot of us left. I'm looking to join that group, but not because of poor grades or my disinterest in physics; I just want some raw experience. I want to sell my belongings, hop in my Honda, & take off from Minnesota to somewhere…
I have $4k in my savings. I went to a community college my first year half, so I owe Sallie Mae [only] $9k. I have a grace period after the end of the semester so I have quite a bit of time & I'll probably open up another account, stick a grand or two in it & set up automated payments & forget about that ***** for a while.
What should I do? Where should I go?
I want to head somewhere warm. My dream was to go into research, maybe find a substitute for silicon. The world could use a new transistor. Reality is… It's just too out of reach for me. Undergrad >> grad school… Uhh & the $$$.
Now my dream is to go out on my own & btw, I'm kicking myself for not tossing the breadboard aside & gone straight into programming. I'm clever. How long you think it'd take me to learn how to develop apps? 2 years? I have a few ideas…
Btw, I'll be leaving Uni on good terms. I mean, I'll have failed this semester's courses because I'll stop going but I don't think the instructors here care.
First I'd say you are not committed to your field of study.
Go to your local Library and take the Vocational Aptitude tests. These should be in the reference section. If not ask a librarian.
These tests will assist you in finding which field is best for you to work in for the rest of your life. This is the field you are best suited for, the easiest for you to learn, the one you will be happiest working in and make the most contribution.
There are several tests which narrow down the fields to a specific job area.
It will take you several hours over a couple of weekends to narrow it down to a job.
You don't have to follow it but it helps to know what it is when choosing your paths and in choices A vs B in your career.
These tests are free at the library but you can also do these same tests online for a small fortune.
Another one is the ASVAB online for free.
It is distressing watching someone struggling along in a field he isn't suited for and doesn't like.
It was the best thing I ever did for me. My path was obvious after I did the tests.
The path may surprise you.
After you find your passion, You don't have to continue school right now, I took a year and worked then I joined up for four in the corps.(USAF). Then I went to school, committed because I knew I didn't want to dig ditches for the rest of my life. I went on the GI Bill. I know where you are at. I was there. Burned out from school. Find your field before you quit so you know which way to go.
You sound like you have clear ideas about your goals, go somewhere warm, party, and replace silicon. Forget the silicon replacement. Go for goals one and two. Maybe you could drive for Uber. You could tell your clients all about linear algebra while you drive them around.
"Straight into programming" would indeed have been a better plan. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 186,600 new jobs in software development in the period 2014-2024, whereas the number of new jobs in EE is expected to be LESS THAN ZERO. (I kid you not.)
It'll be harder to learn programming outside of school, but I guess you better not borrow any more money…

- If I drop something into the engine bay, can I unscrew the bottom of the car to get it? I dropped something into the engine bay and can hear it landed onto the bottom. On the bottom of the car is a metal sheet. I can't squeeze under my car, but I can feel there are screws down there. Do you think I can unscrew one side of the metal sheet (the side closest to the front bumper), bend open the metal sheet slightly, and poke a stick into it to retrieve what I dropped? I have a 2017 Honda CR-V.
