Is my honda civic worth what I payed and does it have potential?
I just bought a honda civic 1998 off craiglist for 1300. Its has 17k miles on it and has some problems. My friends were telling me to be careful when buying off craiglist especially hondas because they get stolen alot. How would i know if they car was stolen? Also do you think it was worth the money? It is clean on the exterior and inferior, only problems are it needs a oil change, o2 sensor fix, a new exhuast, and a new battery. I bought it for my first car and wanted to use it to learn stick. How much will it cost me to buy and have all these issues installed?
Does it have a clean title? You will need the title to register it. Also, insist on a Carfax
Did you make sure the title was clean before purchase? Hope so. You will certainly find out when you go to transfer title if you have not already.
It is a solid car, Kevin, and will serve you well if you continue to give it proper service and maintenance. Expect to pay close to a grand to get it road worthy. Even with that it is still a decent deal.
170,000 miles or 17,000? How do you know it needs an O2 sensor, did you have a mechanic inspect the car for you? If not then I'm betting the cats are bad, and that is usually caused by some type of oil leak.
Battery $100 at parts store, get a battery and alternator test done there.
Full exhaust system, total guess $800, if needs cat add $200.
Did you get a bill of sale, a properly signed title and of course check the seller's ID to make sure it matched the title info, ie if title says George Jones, then the seller should be the owner George Jones?
The car may be an OK deal, no way to say until you have a mechanic review it and give you repair estimates.
Go to instavin right now and pull a full report. Print it and keep it in your car paperwork, so you have it in case you want to sell the car.
Best of luck.
Do you mean 170k miles instead of 17k miles? That would make a lot more sense. You just bought yourself a beater car. Run the VIN with the police to check if it was stolen and check the title. The oil change will set you back maybe $30. If you are certain the oxygen sensor is broken, go pick one up at an auto parts store. It shouldn't cost a lot for an old Honda. For the exhaust, if it really needs to be replaced, see if you can find a serviceable one in a junkyard if you really want to cut down on cost. A battery shouldn't set you back much more than $100. I'd give a estimate of around $300 in parts. If you do the work yourself it's not going to cost that much.

- Does a 99 Honda CR-V have and up and downstream oxygen sensors? My check engine light came on, took it in to O'Reily's, and they say I need a new O2 sensor. They can't tell me if it is up or downstream though so I'm wondering if the 99 CR-V only has one.
