Learning the basics of cars, and advice on how to pick out a second hand car?

So I'm a 17 year old highschool student who drives and in time wants to get his own car, most likely second-hand. At the time now though after passing the permit test and my driving test I still don't know much about cars (I know a little bit like things like a v-8 engine and what not), Is there a website or maybe a series of videos on youtube or something that explain the basics and specs of a car because I really have started getting into cars and know nothing about them besides like top brand names.

Also I is there anything or any good advice I should know when picking out a second hand car and the price? I would really like to know any so I know what I'm doing when it comes to finding the right car for me (I currently like toyotas, hondas, and subarus)

Talk to your friends first. Find out what they feel is important to know - maintenance, how to change a tire, how to evaluate a vehicle. Generally, you want to buy the best car you can afford when taking into consideration the cost of gas, maintenance, and insurance. Enlist the help of a friend or a friend's dad if yours is not being helpful.

If you really want to learn more about maintaining cars, get a beater car. Then you'll be forced to deal with old car problems. But if that's too intense for you, you can always just get a $3000-$7000 car and slowly learn about cars through forums, books, and YouTube videos. At that price range, I would look for something like a Mazda 3 or Hyundai Elantra and if you work part time and during the summer it should be an attainable budget.

I think this is what you are looking for.
this is a list of playlists detailing how individual car parts work. Watching all of these videos will give you a solid understanding of how cars work. Enough for you to make decisions on which cars to pick.

  • Small family car for learning to drive? Hi, I was wanting some help to do with what car to buy. The basic rundown is that I'm wanting a car a 17 year old can learn to drive in, so there's the obvious of low insurance, safety and reliability etc. It needs five seats as it will also be used as a general family car and can be up to about £6000. I have been looking around and so far am leaning towards the Honda Jazz, but any advice on the subject would be very much appreciated.
  • Planning to buy a second hand bike? This is my first bike. Also i'm a short guy. 5 feet 2 inches. I have chosen some bikes. Please help me choose the good one $ Pulsar 135 ls $ Honda Stunner $Honda Twister $ Suzuki Slingshot Any other bikes in your suggestion. Less weight and short
  • Looking for a second hand first bike? I'm currently thinking between the Yamaha DT 125R and Honda CG 125. I'm a heavy bloke but not really big, 19 stone and 5'11. The lower looking CG (for my weight), reliability, cost etc of the honda is appealing to me, as it needs to be cheap and bombproof, but the yamaha has more power to shift my weight to-from work, and is offroad, making me assume its better in the snow and with hills (i live in the area around barnsley, and will be travelling about an hour to work)
  • Learning on a 250 Two-Stroke KTM? I've ridden four wheelers all my life, but I've only ever ridden a dirtbike once and it was a 4 stroke Honda, so I know the two stroke KTM will have much more power than I'm used to, but I'm looking to get into bikes and my buddy will sell me one CHEAP. Is it a fairly good bike to learn on, how hard IS it to learn on, and will it be a good bike to just take for rides in the woods as I won't be racing it like the previous owner?
