03 Shadow Sputters and Dies?

I have an '03 Honda Shadow Spirit that began stalling on me. It was working fine, and then i took it for a ride and it sputtered and died on me while riding. We managed to get it home by keeping the throttle up kind of high. Is this a clogged fuel filter issue? Also, when we opened it up, it looked like there were 2 fuel filters. Has anyone heard of 2 filters on these bikes? Any help would be appreciated. I need to sell the bike.

It could be a clogged air filter

There's tons of things it could be. Have you did any maintenance on it recently? If so. Double check everything you did. It sounds like a fuel delivery issue, but that's just a guess. Is the petcock on the side open all the way? If so, pull the fuel line and see if fuel flows easily out. There's a screen in the petcock that can easily get partially clogged. There's one fuel filter. It's fairly easy to find under the seat right before the fuel pump. Follow the fuel lines from the tank and you'll see it.
How is your gas? Add any additive recently? If so, drain the fuel, add fresh.

It is well known that the higher the RPM the more fuel is used. So you would think if the fuel filter was that clogged up it would idle but not run at a high RPM which I believe you said it had to be kept at to get home. That would go for air filters also. Now if there's a blockage in the carb idle jets that might do it.

Your statement - "We managed to get it home by keeping the throttle up kind of high." Is a symptom of carburetor problems, not fuel delivery problems.
If the fuel filter was clogged, the engine would starve for fuel at higher RPMs.
Your problem is either a clogged jet, or slide diaphragms leaking.
The pilot jets are used in the idle and slow speed circuits.
The opening in the pilot jet is as thin as a pin head and gets easily clogged with bad gas.
Take the carbs apart and clean the jets.

Description isn't specific enough.
Symptoms could also be from electrical problems.

  • Honda Shadow sputters and dies? I just bought a 95 Honda Shadow. I believe it's an ace. 1100cc. 50k miles. It has a small oil leak, so I filled it with 5w-50. Now when I start it and rev it, it will sputter. If I let off the gas it will idle fine. When I put it into gear it will die, regardless if I'm giving it gas or not. Any ideas on the issue? I'm stumped.
  • Dropped motorcycle - engine sputters then stops. Later on starts, but stops again? I dropped my 2000 Honda Nighthawk CB750 on its right, picked it up in It was riding fine right after, then about 10 minutes later it sputtered and stopped while riding. Looked like the battery and starter motor were fine, engine just couldn't turn over. About 10 minutes later it started, and I rode for a couple miles. A few hours later I rode it again, but it only lasted about 2 miles before stopping again. I waited a few hours after that it started again. Does anybody have suggestions?
  • I have 1998 honda civic that dies after running for 6minutes when it is cool outside What could be wrong? 1998 Honda civic dies after running for 6 minutes when it is 50 degrees or colder out. It will start right back up after waiting 60 seconds and run just fine for rest of the day. Looking for clues as to what can be wrong
  • 2000 Honda Civic randomly dies? My 2000 Honda Civic dies while driving. There's no warning - no shudder or stalling, it just randomly dies. At idle, at low speeds and even while on the highway. When it happens, none of the dash lights work (flashers, gear indicator, nothing) and you have to put it in neutral to restart. It takes several times to restart and usually you have to push on the gas pedal while turning the key. Any ideas? No codes. Replaced broken distributor cap about a month ago.
