Why will my scooter start hard after sitting for a week?
I have a Honda Lead AF20 from 1998 (I'm not sure, though) and in it 36200 km. I bought it at about 35900 km but we (I and my father) repaired or replaced a lot of things on it. They were: battery, piston, cylinder, cylinder head(not sure if it's called cylinder head but it's the thing in which the plug sits)self-starting electro-motor, bendix, bearings, seals, and there was something ugly amateurish work on the carburator with the seal of the(/a) needle going in the carburator. If I'm not wrong, that was the choke.
So, the problem is that after sitting for about a week it really struggles to start. The battery and the self starting is good, there's very good compression and the pug is also good. The self-starting electro-motor has to turn the engine for about 20-30 seconds to get the engine going. Whilst the motor struggles to start the engine, I can smell petrol and when it sstarts, it coughs out a lot of white smoke. It did it before and after the repairing, but when it sits for only 3-4-5 days it starts at the second I press the start button. If the waiting exceeds the one week, it will not get worse, I mean, it sat this winter for at least 2 months and after 30 seconds it started.
After the struggling starts it is weak until the white smoke comes out of it.
What can cause this problem? Might it be carburator or fuel-pump related?
Replace the float and the float needle valve. Cylinder is flooding with gas. Replace the pilot (idle) jet too if available. Get a manual and properly set the idle speed and idle mixture.
Carb scooters like to be run hot. Drive it at least every day or start it every day and let idle for 5 minutes. A long drive for an hour once or twice a week would solve start problems.
So, if I don't drive it this often it will not be better despite everything I do?
Or will it be better with the carb repairing you told me to do?
At this time of the year I can't drive it on long drives because of the weather. I live in central Europe. That might explain my bad grammar.
- Why did my gas tank start rusting after I washed it out with muriatic acid? I have a 1978 Honda Express 49cc moped, the gas tank had rust collecting in it and I've tried everything before going to muriatic acid. When I drained the tank out I was surprised, it was super clean, and I was happy. Until I came back out four hours later to see it had started rusting again. I rinsed it with water, blew it out and sloshed it around with gas. Why does it keep rusting? Do I need to use a sealant? What should I do?
- Scooter smells of raw gas after shutdown? Have checked for leaks, found none. Carb is not draining/overflowing. No fuel in exhaust. No drop in fuel consumption (over 80 mpg). Scooter runs fine, no hesitation, no loss of power. Have changed the oil and it is normal. 2005 Honda Vino 125. Started about a week ago. Thoughts? 2005 Yamaha Vino, my bad. Plugs are ok, no fuel, tan color. I replaced the fuel cap, fuel lines, petcock, carb bowl gasket and air filter. I do not know which part fixed the problem but the smell is gone.
- Ow long will it take for a '83 Honda XL250r engine to seize while just sitting? I'm rebuilding it and have the gas tank and air filter off right now. I won't be able to work on it for a few months and it's kept in my heated basement. How long will it take to seize up? And how to keep it from seizing up without stabilizer. How long will it take for a '83 Honda XL250r engine to seize while just sitting.
- I bought I ped last week now it won't start? Last week I bought a Honda sky 50! It has been looked after well and is in good nick! It started using both the starter motor and kick start! I went to get it out of my garage today 8 days after and it would not start! The battery was fully charged and the starter motor did turn! There was plenty of fuel and the spark plug is okay! Any ideas why it won't start?
