2014 Honda Acoord Brake fluid change?

Every 3 years minimum it needs a brake exchange. I've had the car for little over 4 years. Will it be okay with just bleeding them?

There's no need to change the brake fluid. By the way it's Accord.

The fluid is probably fine, but if you want to bleed them sure why not. It will reduce any moisture in the line so that helps prevent other issues later.

What is a brake exchange? So can't comment on that.
As for the pads and rotors, have a shop look at them and they can comment on that topic.

Yes, you can bleed the brakes to do a fluid exchange.

You are being taken for a ride - neither the owner's manual (p509) in the first source nor the comprehensive service schedule in the second source recommends brake fluid replacement.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it attracts moisture and becomes contaminated over time. The moisture leads to corrosion in the calipers. Heavy braking, especially mountain driving or heavy start and stop driving can heat the calipers enough to cause the moisture in the fluid to boil. Once it boils, further braking will be ineffective or non existent. Changing the fluid every 2 to 3 years is highly recommended although few people do. It is accomplished by bleeding the brakes while adding fluid until all the fluid in the reservoir is fresh. All shops which perform thos do so with a closed system to prevent contaminating the environment with the old fluid.

Ahh. Here's the thing. By bleeding brakes you're 99% of the way to flushing the fluid, so may as well finish the job. It's an extra few bucks for the new fluid. Just keep adding fluid until the new stuff comes out of the nipple. You'll see it looks cleaner if you use a clear bleed tube. Brake fluid is usually hygroscopic - it absorbs moisture - (unless you have DOT5) and as you know water likes to rot metal so your brake system will corrode internally. Also, water tends to boil when heated, such as in a brake system. Steam compresses (unlike brake fluid) so your pedal will go to the floor and you won't have any brake power. Brake fluid is like what $10 or something? Not sure but basically, it's easy and cheap to change, so why wouldn't you?

Yes you can do this but it is likely not necessary. Usually you'll only need to add brake fluid when you get low, not bleed and replace. But bleeding and replacing won't do any harm.

That's all you need to do when changing brake fluid
To be honest with you I've seen more people mess up their brakes by trying to bleed them that it would have been better leaving it alone. I've rarely seen hydraulic problems caused by not changing the brake fluid.
95% of the cars on the road haven't had that done to them.

The reason for fluid flush is to get rid of accumulated condensation in the fluid which is hydrophilic. Water can corrode brake lines, calipers and pistons, which are expensive and a PITA to replace. Just bleeding if for removing air bubbles… That you probably don't have, so do the whole job, not half asss. It just takes time and fresh fluid.

Brake fluid absorbs water over time. This water can cause vapour in your brake system. Vapour can be comressed, reducing the efficiency of your brakes. For this reason it's recommended that brake fluid is changed every 2 years. Bleeding the brakes won't deal with the proble.

  • What happens if I use a non-Honda brake fluid? I have a newer Honda that is low on brake fluid. Manual says I need to use Genuine Honda fluid which is way more expensive and only recommends using a non-Honda fluid equivalent in an emergency situation, only if it's new and sealed. So what could happen if I use a non-Honda fluid? Does it damage the system so I have to get it drained As soon as possible? Or is this just a scare tactic to sell more Honda products?
