1993 Honda Accord EX speedometer reads very slow. Tried VSS replace?
So my friend bought a used "93 Honda Accord EX with 195,000 on it. A lot of what would need to be replaced has been, including what appeared to me as a full rewire harness (not tucked just replaced). And mechanically the car is running very flawlessly apart from this one issue I dove it home as it was a standard transmission and once I got on the highway, I realized I was going well over speed indicated on the speedo… As in I felt like I was going 60 and it indicated only 30. So I tried to really focus on vehicle speed feel (turns out I have a pretty good feel for speed in a Honda haha) and made it home. We then got out the most accurate GPS we could find and tracked speed with that. It showed way off as I had feared… We bought a brand new Vehicle speed sensor and installed it yesterday afternoon. Then retested… Same thing but not as bad. It shows speed off by
20=18 actual
25=35 actual
30=40 actual
35=58 actual
40=65 actual
40+ = 70+
and barely moves higher as you speed up even more
Electrically it looks ok. Fuse is fine. No CEL. No sporadic jumping of the needle and even moves smoothly. Passed emissions. Just indicates well below actual speed. Its not consistent rate off which I initially thought the 195/60R15 tires and wheels were at fault but it would be consistently off. Is it the actual spindle and gear inside the transmission? Could it be electrical even though everything appears to function and look correct?
Ideas welcome.
using GPS as Speedo for now lol.
First you need to check for a proper signal from the Speed Sensor.To measure the signal you need to check with a DVOM (Digital Volt Ohm Meter) to the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) wires and check for AC Voltage.
It will be small and goes up and down with the speed of the vehicle. A good square wave on a scope. I can see the VSS has been replaced and there's signal to the speedometer. So the problem is in the speedometer.
The main Integrated Chip on the speedometers circuit board has probably gone bad. This causes erratic or no operation of the speedometer/odometer.
There's no way to repair the problem. You must get a new or used speedometer. Hope it help. HTH
- Why is my car moving very slow on uphill? Honda civic 1.4 2000 manual problem, car is terribly slow on uphill only. I must stop and allow others to overtake as a result of this problem. I have taken to many garage and their predictions were contradicted. However no one told me exactly what is the cause.
- My Honda Civic keeps overheating and accelerates very slow? I have Honda Civic 98 EX coupe, and it overheats very quick, i replaced a leaking hose, i got the headgasket replaced, a new thermostate and it still overheats, the car also doesn't accelerate at the rate it should, i could have my foot flooring the gas pedal but it will take forever to eve reach 60 mph.
- I need to replace the left side mirror on my 1993 Honda Civic? The car is a LX model with power mirrors but the local junkyard doesn't have any power mirrors Is it possible to install a normal mirror, mirror that adjusts manually, in place of the power mirror until I can find the correct item? I need to drive the car but won't until I can get a mirror.
- Honda Civic vehicle speed sensor (VSS)? The speedometer on my car has stopped working after having the clutch replaced. The problem seems to be that the vehicle speed sensor was connected incorrectly and has now been damaged/burnt out. I need a replacement sensor but I'm struggling to find the correct part online or a part number. I'm in the North East UK. Could anyone with a bit of knowledge help find the part for me? The car is a Mk.8 2009 Honda Civic 2.2 i-ctdi SE, 6-speed manual transmission.
