How soon might a squeaky serpentine belt finally break?
It's not a really bad squeaking, been going on for a month or two. Can't afford repairs now. How will I know if and when it does break?
It's a 2000 Honda Accord with 130K miles if that matters.
Well, how long is a piece of string?
You have a lot to consider. Is/was the Honda maintained properly? It might need a belt. Is it worn out (shabby, hardened, stretchy, or frayed), anywhere along it's length? You'll know when it breaks, all the idiot lights come on, and the engine usually stops.
At @ 130K most engines need to have the timing belt replaced. That's much more critical than the serpentine belt! Check to see if the engine is in need of the timing belt… A timing belt is gonna cost you some big $.
If only the serpentine belt is worn, you and a friend (who knows their way with tools), can replace it yourself. If the belt is just squeaky, an old hot rodder trick is to spray some WD40 along it's length and the noise goes away…
Murphy's Law:
"If something can go wrong- it will go wrong. At the worse possible time."
That's why we have vehicle maintenance…
- What is the squeaky noise on my 2009 honda rebel CMX 250 when I start the first time (it then goes away). What could this be? I have a Honda Rebel CMX 250 and it makes a weird horn / belt slipping like noice only in the morning when the first try to start the engine. What could this be?
- When will Toyota finally stop making the Corolla? The Chevy Cruze is an example of a failed car, but why did it fail? Chevy always insulted the Corolla and also the Honda Civic in its Cruze commercials but it seems that the Cruze is the one that fell through the cracks and straight to hell. The Corolla continues on to this day since 1968 and now we're seeing the 2020 Corolla. It just seems like there will be no end in sight to the Corolla, but why
- Honda replaced my serpentine belt but my car is now taking longer to crank? Honda recently replaced my serpentine belt (2012 Honda Civic, 185k miles). I noticed that on cold starts, the car takes longer to crank and then eventually starts. Sounds like it doesn't want to start but then does. I will take it to Honda but I'm just curious what this is likely caused by? Loose belt? Tight belt? Pulley issue? No noticeable squealing, just the crank time. Instead of the usual 1-3 seconds, now my car takes about 3-5.
- HONDA CIVIC 2013 OWNERS; How long can your car run on empty gas until your car finally just stops? I run on E all the time, and I'm always scared that one day it will just stop… Knock on wood, it hasn't happened yet and I hope it doesn't! But i'm just curious to see if any of you have had this happen to you, and how long you traveled on E? It's good to keep in mind!
