Is it more expensive to get a new chipped key made at a dealership or by a locksmith?

I lost my only key to my 2001 honda accord and am trying to find the cheapest alternative. The locksmith said they'd be about 125 dollars. Would a dealership be any cheaper?

Since yoiu called a smithy and posted the cost,

1, smithy is cheaper
2, smithy will be quicker. No waiting.

Call both and ask. Do some comparison shopping if you are in a metro area with choices. A small town not so much. Sometimes if you go online there will be a discount coupon for the dealer for parts. Overall my guess is a locksmith who has the special machine to make a chipped key, not to mention the key blank will be cheaper.

My suggestion to you will be to compare both of them and choose whichever is good for you. Anyway from my personal experience I can recommend locksmith will be better one to go for. As they are affordable and do the wok quickly also.

  • Why does it appear used cars are more expensive than new? For example. I'm looking at a 2019 Honda City, new it's $17,990 drive away if I look on car sales the 2017 model is even $19,000. Ok the 2019 is a manual price but that's a huge difference and 2 years on. Please tell me what I'm missing?
  • How to get a key made for my motercycle? I've got a 2004 honda cbr f4i with title and registration in my name. I lost my only key. I called a honda dealership and they said they couldn't help me and to call a locksmith. I called a locksmith and they said they couldn't help me and to call a honda dealership! What the hell? I know I'm not the only person this has happened to, any suggestions?
  • If my 92 honda key isn't working, can I replace just the part where the key goes in, or do I have to do more? They are telling me that with installation, it will be like $300 at least, My friend just had the same problem, but in an much older pick up, but she said they just replaced a small part where they ket goes in?
  • How to bypass a honda chipped key system? I lost my only transponder key to the car, is there a way to use an unchipped key and bypass the system? I want to know if there's a way to bypass the transponder and transceiver system for the ignition? I don't want to spend 125 dollars for a locksmith to come out, and the dealership said they charge 145 and the car has to be there to program the chip.
