1998 Honda Civic running rough, smoke coming from where manifold meets bottom of engine?

Mechanic says head gasket is good (Just putting this out there because half the time everybody cries head gasket on these boards). The check engine light is flashing -- I gather it means misfire. It used to be on but steady because the car needs an O2 sensor. It seemed like it was going to stall out and I smelled smoke and looked under the hood and it was smoking right where the manifold meets the bottom of the engine in front.

Added (1). It is EXACTLY what this car is doing… No answers for that one either, though:

There's an exhaust manifold and intake manifold. Which one is it? No manifold is near the bottom of the engine. Also, it is almost 20 years old.

As far as I can see your leaking exhaust from the exhaust manifold, just seems that simple.

  • What does a engine knock coming from bottom of a 1993 del sol mean? I'm thinking of getting a 93 Honda del sol but need to know what a knock at the lower part of the engine could mean
  • Mechanic said he rebuilt the engine, smoke coming out of engine, could it be the grease burning off? The mechanic said he rebuilt the engine to my 1974 Honda CB550 I bought from him. Said he rebuilt the engine and is in perfect running condition. He has many bikes lying around and seems as if he is a hobbyist for bikes. He told me that he basically greased up a lot of parts of the motor and it is burning the grease off. The next oil change I do should remove the excess grease.
  • Can a 16.L engine fit into a 1998 Honda Civic LX? (before doing engine swap)? I had an blown motor on my 1998 Honda Civic LX, I have new spark plugs, distributor cap and some other items, however, since the old spark plugs happened to be melted as well, I have no option other to do a engine swap. I've been doing some research, and it seems like I only have the 1.6L engine as a option. By the way, the blown motor is a D16Y8, and is automatic.
  • Smoke coming out from reservoir? Okay so I have a 98 Honda civic 1.6 4 cylinder. Everytime I drive more than 15 minutes I can see smoke coming from right side of hood where my overflow tank is (reservoir) so I open it up and most of the smoke comes from black tube on the cap connected to the overflows tank. I HAVE already replaced radiator cap, radiator hoses (top and bottom) thermostat, fuel filter. I don't know what else I could try? What else could I buy to fix the problem? Buy a new radiator? Any suggestions help
