Added (1). This happens when driving normally. It's not as though I'm braking and then hear the grinding… I'll be accelerating and suddenly hear it. It lasts a couple of seconds, then goes away. During a 30 minute drive, it happened about a dozen times, though some were very close to each other. Once I drove for about 20 minutes, it appeared to stop.

Added (3). Oh, one other thing I noticed: at least a few times (perhaps all of them?), the radio stopped playing.
Your brakes need a mechanic.Start by checking level of brake fluid.Power brake booster could have issues.A cylinder on one of the wheels could be seizing up
