98 Honda Civic Overheating?

I have a 98 Honda civic Lx its overheating, It has coolant but when it starts to overheat it puts all the coolant in the reservoir. It does not consume coolant or leak coolant. Hoses do bulge up. I have replaced the coolant cap, thermostat.

Can a bad water pump be the source of problem?

Added (1). Also radiator fans have been bypassed so they run all the time.

COUNTRY BOY is SO-SO here! If HOSES are bulging, your have WORN HEAD BOLTS or a warped CYLINDER HEAD! WITH engien fully HOT, check for bulging! NEW HEAD BOLTS work GREAT on four banger HONDA engines! Do NOT use PRESTONE IN HERE EVER, either only genuine HONDA factory coolants, thank you! NEW HEAD bolts can repair a slightly warped head if done with ENGINE FULLY HOT! Check COOLING FAN SWITCH and replace it at 100k miolinter54n\vals using ONLY HONDA PARTS and not auto sp\tors\e junk parts! Usually DENSO supplies the sensors for HONDA! POWER WASH the space behind the RADIATOR< where leaves, bug bodies, feathers, paper, and small animal droppings have collected! This IMPROVES air flow around engine, rad, and even A/C condenser lives! T|IT is the SANDWICH from HELL! Clear all blockages here! BYE NOW! NO PRESTONE EVER in ANY year HONDA engine! HEAD BOLTS that are over S T R E T C H E D will do this. TORQUE WRENCH time!

HI, I agree with Country Boy but would add the radiator cap or the purser cap on the system not holding the proper amount (7 to 14 lbs) and its letting to much coolant out of the motor, then its lost and next time you start it your low on coolant.

Only two things will cause the coolant recovery reservoir to overfill when the engine heat's up.
#1. A thermostat that is sticking closed. #2. An internal cooling system compression leak. The dealer of your car can tell you which one it is.

  • Why is my 1998 Honda civic lx still overheating? I've replaced the thermostat, water pump, timing belt, flushed the radiator and done a coolant test to check for gasses and all is good. The fan is wire up so it automatically comes on when ignition is turned on and is blowing the correct way. Do I need to try a new radiator cap or radiator? Engine light is on but it's for a 02 sensor. Any help is appreciated.
  • I'm driving a 96 honda civic and my car has been shaking and overheating? I have check for leaks and everything is fine but i do have a rusted spark plug, i'm wondering if that may be the cause of shaking and excessive overheating to the point i'm driving with the heater on all the time. Can anyone let me know if the spark plug is the problem and if i replace this one rusted plug will the car drive back normally?
  • My Honda Civic keeps overheating and accelerates very slow? I have Honda Civic 98 EX coupe, and it overheats very quick, i replaced a leaking hose, i got the headgasket replaced, a new thermostate and it still overheats, the car also doesn't accelerate at the rate it should, i could have my foot flooring the gas pedal but it will take forever to eve reach 60 mph.
  • My 2001 Honda Civic is overheating and I can't figure out why? I have replaced the radiator cap, coolant reservoir, and thermostat. Also, I check the fans at various times and everytime they are running fine. Lastly, I'm not sure if this information helps, but I live in southern Louisiana where it is almost always hot. I'm a poor 25 year old female college student and I have no idea what else to do.
