Do i have to change manual transmition oil?
I had gotten an oil change and they had told me I need a transmission oil change. It is a 2005 Honda civic and they said that I need it done. But I called a mechanic that I usually go to because he could do it for less, and he had said that I shouldn't have to do that at all. So do I have to change it or don't I?
I agree with your mechanic. Unlike motor oil or the fluid in an automatic transmission, the oil in a manual transmission lives a very easy life. It's not subjected to combustion heat, unburned fuel, and the general stresses an engine places on motor oil. It's also not subjected to big shearing forces and high heat like the fluid in an automatic transmission is because a manual transmission operates in a different way entirely.
I wouldn't change the fluid unless you notice a problem with shifting. If the transmission is leaking, you'd probably need to change the fluid by default because when you'd open up the housing to change the bad seal, much of the fluid would probably just leak out so you'd have to replace it with new fluid once it was back together anyway. Unless I had either of those problems though, I wouldn't change it.
I have the same year. And same trans. The thing is after a certain mileage you have to do it but sadly you can't really check when you have to. The only way is by drawing all the oil out and well then you gotta put new oil in. It'll set you back 30 bucks. But I'd rather it be 30 then 300 down the road. Treat your civic right and it'll treat you right
My answer starts with what i have done or can do versus what my older brother is up to… Learning for yourself may take refreshments… Like do you know what size wrench your vehicle takes? Usually its a 14, 15 or even 16 inch one, but then… More than likely when not working in a LICENSED corporate professional area covered by money back guarantees… The question of using the oil filter replacement is as important as the one you are asking here… And then there's the gasket… And any additives that are sometimes suggested/ but as far as the word TRANSMISSION, its a red viscous solution, and 9.000 miles per change or every third visit to a professional is pretty basic, and if it costs 69.00 dollars when all is said and done, just do it.
Only if there's a reason, like it leaked or got water in it.
IT does NOT really need it, but use ONLY MOBIL ONE SYNTHETIC GEAR OIL if you decide to do it! THis would be a PREVENTATIVE measure ONLY! GEAR OIL is very thick and coats the bearings and rollers and usually does NOT need to be changed, as it's VISCOSITY and DETERGENTS last a long long time! AFTER about 100k miles, it is GOOD to do this change anyways, but DO NOT use the JUNK found at most oil change centers! They do NOT warranty anything they do and often used INFERIOR fluids and oils that RUIN CARS! I found this out QUICKLY! MOBIL/EXXON Products are used by JETS< AIRPLANES and CHOPPERS! NOBODY uses VALVOLINE in any factory or AIRPLANE engine ANYWHERE for good reasons! Most oil change places get paid EXTRA for inducing you to spend more money on their CHEAPER fluids that actually cause TROUBLE later on! BYE NOW!
The manual transmission fluid does require changing, Like all oils it degrades with time, and the high loads/ stress put on it takes its toll. Your owner manual recommends it as early as 3years/60,000miles. Here is a copy of your owners book. See page 149.

- 2004 Honda Pilot! I did an oil change today check the manual for the engine oil capacity, it is 4.8 liters and put 4.4 liters and add .5 ltr? Total engine oil put is 4.9 liters and I'm surprised the dipstick is above the second hole by 10mm. Is it overfill or do i need to remove some?
- Did oil change on 2004 Honda odyssey about 2 weeks ago .this morning I notice a puddle of oil on ground plug is tight and filter is tight? Did oil change on 2004 Honda odyssey about 2 weeks ago. This morning I notice a puddle of oil on ground plug is tight and filter is tight? - 1
- If in the owners manual it says I should use 5W-20 motor oil, can I use 10W-40 motor oil instead? I have a 2009 Honda Fit. I just recently bought 10W-40 and when I got home to put oil in the manual said 5W-20. What's the difference? And is it okay if I still use the 10W-40?
