How many YEARS will my 2005 Honda Civic LX last?

I have a 2006 Honda Civic LX sedan, with 68,000 miles. I'm now down to driving only about 4000 miles/year (I run a home-based business), so clearly miles not going to determine when my car dies.

I would like to own it for a total of 16 years (until 2022), by which time I might still be not much higher than 100,000 miles.

So my question is, what sort of maintenence based on calendar time should I be doing?

1) Waxing - I want the car to look good even when it is old, of course. How often should waxing be done?
2) Tires - I'm not wearing my tires down in miles, but how about years? How often should they be changed if the rubber is getting old?
3) What other sort of maintenence should be done on a time schedule rather than a miles schedule?

Follow the maintenance schedule in the owners manual - it is time/mileage based. As far as tires getting old before they are worn out that is up to you - some say replace every 5 yrs some say when checked sidewalls get severe - I'm not a fan of replacing tires with lot of mileage left - even tough they are checked a bit - but that is just me. Wash and wax according to the owners manual and drive the car at least 30 minutes once a month just to fully heat up and boil off condensate water in the exhaust system. Can't emphasize enough following the Owners manual guidelines for the definitive answer.

This car can easily last until 2022 if you perform the maintenance as outlined in the owners manual. Do not forget to change the cam belt and water pump at 110,000 miles as this is an interference engine and serious damage will be done if you neglect this maintenance. If the car sits outside then wax it every 3 months. If it sits in a garage wax it every 6 months. As you drive only 4,000 miles a year I recommend you change the oil/filter once each year. Also be sure and add a fuel stabilizer to each tank of fuel as this car is not driven enough. Gasoline starts to degrade after only 30 days so you need to add a stabilizer like Seafoam or Staybil. Fill the tank when the gauge reaches the 1/2 mark and do not wait until it is almost empty. This will prevent condensation within the tank. If you park this car outside then replace the tries every 10 years no matter how much tread is left on the tire unless you cover the tires with some sort of tire cover. The sun will cause damage to the tires and make them unsafe at highway speeds. Regularly apply a non-petroleum-based preservative to all surface areas of each tire to combat the sun's damage. If you park the car inside or cover the tires just inspect them each year and once you see tiny cracks around the sidewall replace them. Make sure to keep the tires at the recommended pressure listed in your owners manual and on the drivers door post.

Follow the owners manual. Usually the engine and transmission are the first to go. But since mileage is not a problem for you, it can easily give you service till 2022 and even beyond it if taken good care

Your Honda will easily last 200k, or even 300k, if you properly service and maintain the vehicle.

Wax it quarterly, as in every three months or so. And keep it garaged and/or covered.

Buy only quality tires if you want them to last. They should be replaced if the tread get to a depth below 4/32, or if the tires are showing uneven wear, dry rot, feathering or cracking.
