How to KNOW IF A CADILATIC CONVERTER IS BAD?

Honda CIVIC EX

The cel is one way on an obd2 but that is post 96. You did not state a year so ill go on to another test. With a scanning thermometer, for lack of a better term, you check the temp before, in the middle and after, to see if it is higher in that mid section. It should be.

Anyone that calls it a "cadilatic" converter has no chance of diagnosing if they need a catalytic converter on their car. Have a mechanic diagnose your problem… NOT check what you think is wrong! That way you won't make them look down the wrong trail for a problem that doesn't exist. Car owners should always just tell the mechanic what the var is doing… Not tell them what they think is wrong.

A Honda Dealer will read the stored fault codes and tell you IF the converter is bad.

I assume you mean catalytic converter. You will know when you get a check engine light showing that error or you see a drop in fuel economy.

Emissions test failure. Engine management light illuminated on the dash. Noticeable loss of power if the internals have collapsed.

The word is CATALYTIC. Now go talk to a local mechanic and get it tested.

When it stays out all night without calling.

Take it to an emmisions inspection station

  • How do I know if I have a bad fuel injector? I have a 95 Honda del sol. It doesn't seem to be leaking from underneath the car, and there's no leak from the fuel rail as well. There's no leakage from the injectors. So overall the exhaust smells like gas and there's white smoke coming from it as well. The smoke isn't very thick it is kind of light. Are these the symptoms of a bad injector? How do I test them?
  • Honda Civic EX 1.8L 2008 w/auto trans and 135k mi. Bad torque converter? When I arrive to a stop sign it has a hard time downshifting from 2 to 1, I need to give a brake and wait 5 second until I feel or hear a clunk which means it has already in 1rst gear. Another sympton is vibration it has been increasing these days under normal operation, it is a small vibration like a non balanced wheel. It feels in to the transmission stick. Based on readings I would like to know if this could be a bad torque converter.
  • Does anyone in Colorado know any cheap ways to get a catalytic converter/manifold exhaust leak repair? I took my car into Goodyear today and found out I have a manifold exhaust leak and that I need a new catalytic converter. I drive a 2001 Honda Civic LX and am incredibly inexperienced with cars. The price estimate was $883.37 and I was wondering if anyone in Colorado Springs know of a mechanic that will do the repairs cheaper or a mechanic that will install maybe an aftermarket cat converter? If I looked for aftermarket converters, what would I need?!
  • Can I separate a 2000 Honda Civic EX exhaust manifold from its catalytic converter? Just learned that I have a crack in the exhaust manifold of my 2000 Honda Civic EX. I could buy a new manifold with a attached catalytic converter for about $170 but could get a used manifold for $12. I would rather save myself the $100+ by just replacing the manifold. So my question is would I be able to separate the exhaust manifold from the catalytic converter, and switch in a functional but used one?
