I think the connection between my catalytic converter and exhaust is broken?

I have a 1998 Subaru Legacy, manual. While driving home from college i stopped at a rest stop to use the bathroom and when i started the car back up again it was insanely loud… Last time this happened they said it was the connection between the catalytic converter and the exhaust, they said the parts themselves were fine it was just the connection. I'm in a financial bind and my stepdad is a pretty good mechanic though that's not what he does for a living, but considering he literally built himself a honda civic all from parts i'd say he could fix what ever is wrong. My question is how do i fix it and is there a way to just fix the connection without having to replace the converter or exhaust since they are both perfectly in tact, also quick fact, there was nothing that forced the connection to break, no bump or scraping the bottom of the car or anything like that. How would I fix this?

Could be the pipe just pulled apart at a connection. If thats the case slip it back together and put a muffler type clamp on it. If its a broken weld, you need to get it rewelded. If the pipe between the converter and the muffler is bad, have someone weld a new section of pipe on it.

Take it to an independent muffler shop (not one of the muffler chains with the yellow signs) and ask them to weld the connection for you. Shouldn't cost more than $50.

Aside from welding, there's really no other method that will last.

Like the other guy said, find a muffler shop to weld it together. You need to have it welded.

Look at it and see what is wrong with it.

  • Is my catalytic converter the problem? I have a Honda civic 91 and its a 4th gen sedan. The problem with it is that the engine cranks but it won't start. I checked the spark plugs and they are all good. Battery has been recently replaced. What i don't get is why it starts up at times and doesn't. Could it be by any chance the catalytic converter that's ruined? I checked it recently, it wants to start but it chokes.
  • Does anyone in Colorado know any cheap ways to get a catalytic converter/manifold exhaust leak repair? I took my car into Goodyear today and found out I have a manifold exhaust leak and that I need a new catalytic converter. I drive a 2001 Honda Civic LX and am incredibly inexperienced with cars. The price estimate was $883.37 and I was wondering if anyone in Colorado Springs know of a mechanic that will do the repairs cheaper or a mechanic that will install maybe an aftermarket cat converter? If I looked for aftermarket converters, what would I need?!
  • Can I separate a 2000 Honda Civic EX exhaust manifold from its catalytic converter? Just learned that I have a crack in the exhaust manifold of my 2000 Honda Civic EX. I could buy a new manifold with a attached catalytic converter for about $170 but could get a used manifold for $12. I would rather save myself the $100+ by just replacing the manifold. So my question is would I be able to separate the exhaust manifold from the catalytic converter, and switch in a functional but used one?
  • Why is my catalytic converter smoking? 1993 Honda Accord LX (F22a1) 4AT At idle the car is about 1500 rpm cold all the way up until warm. But at idle it vibrates a little, with the air on idle drops to 500rpm and the car shakes violently. Also my dizzy is leaking oil. Every so often the engine has a sputter or misfire. Light light pinging noise. I'm sure it's out of time. My ignition anyway. I smell gas when the car is off and after driving it my catalytic converter is smoking. Really stumped here.
