Is it time to place high tariffs on foreign cars and cost prohibitive surtaxes on people who buy them?

This is ridiculous. More than half the population in the United States drives a foreign car, contributing to years of declining auto manufacturing jobs.

And all for no gain.

Any concerns about certain American cars being of subpar quality have been rectified, those days are long behind us. There are multiple American cars that are best in class in multiple categories, most rank high in ALL categories.

These days, they are just as well made as foreign cars, and nearly all of them are priced lower than their comparable foreign counterparts.

And you can get an American car in any type and style you want.

Sedans of all sizes, crossovers, SUVs, Trucks, coupes, convertibles, sports cars, mini-vans, full size passenger vans: You name it, there are about a dozen American choices in each class.

There's no feature you can get on a foreign car that you can't get on an American car.

Simply put, foreign car buyers, you are out of excuses.

Honda, Nissan, Toyota, these are all great cars. And they can continue to be great cars for JAPAN.

But We're not Japan. We're Americans with our own economy to look out for. A Chevrolet Malibu is just as well mechanically as Civic, Camry or Altima.

So stop freaking shooting our economy in the foot. I swear to GOD IF I were a cop I'd be giving a speeding ticket to every last foreign car driver going 1 mile over the speed limit I come across.

Insurance companies should be given massive tax breaks if they refuse to insure foreign cars.

Define foreign cars? Because the parts for vehicles nowadays are produced in more than one place.

Such as Toyotas, where 80% of their parts are mass produced in the US.

Foreign cars?

The "foreign cars" are more likely than the "american cars" to be made in America these days.

Outside of a Tesla, no car is a hundred percent American made and even Tesla relies on foreign suppliers for many components.

First of all, those car manufacturers have factories in the US, and secondly, North American cars are exported around the world.

Or at least threaten to. Japan has a HIGH tariff on imported cans and makes most of the cars sold in the US In China. Problem is that would hit Japan & South Korea the worst, and they are friends. We COULD put a tariff on just Chinese-made cars, and start it low, to give our friends time to move their plants somewhere else, then raise it a bit every year…

More Honda, Toyota, and Nissan automobiles are made in the United States than are imported. 20% of all Fords are built in Mexico. Tariffs are taxes, and I thought Republicans were against raising taxes.

LOL. Many foreign cars have parts that are made in the USA. Do you think Ford, GM, and Chrysler are American made cars? They are made in many countries.

Japan and Germany make the best cars in the world.

A few decades ago, I would have agreed that buying an "American car" is a great way to help our economy. But these days, there are no American cars, just American car companies.

Just as there are Japanese Car companies and German Car companies, but no entirely Japanese or German cars.

Virtually every car these days have components from multiple countries. Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge, Lincoln, Buick, Cadillac, Chryster, Jeep… These all have components manufactured in multiple countries, some domestic, some abroad.

Nissan, Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, Volvo, Volkswagen, Mercedes, Jaguar, Subaru, all have some parts made in America.

There's little to no difference.

When you buy a new car, you are stimulating MULTIPLE countries economies, and it doesn't make a difference what the make is. So you should buy what you like.

Most foreign cars sold in the US are made in the US
The 3 biggest importers of cars into the US are Ford, GM and Chrysler

I'm not from the USA but you are having the same problem that we have in our country. Every man and his dog wants to be a car importer and these days the car market that used to be dominated by only several car manufacturers is now flooded with a huge number of imported brands. The European brands are losing their quality and making it hard to get their vehicles serviced and repaired by anyone except their very expensive service departments and their quality is decreasing but their once respected brand names still draw the gullible, and some of those lower priced Asian cars such as the Chinese cars are death traps on wheels. Whereas years ago there were a few brands to choose from not there are 30 or 40 brands local manufacturers have to compete with all vying for market share. America like our country was producing sub standard cars and had to learn that people demand quality these days and shoddy design or put together cars do not sell and manufacturers had to lift their game of die out, and until they learned that lesson their market share was declining to where Detroit is no longer the giant of a manufacturing centre it once was.
Perhaps President Trump needs to bring in legislation that only cars built in the USA can be sold there. That would knock a lot of these little trashy brands out of the market cutting the choices people have as to what cars they buy and leave the market to the serious brands who have a market share that would be worth employing Americans to make them. Likely 70% of the brands would disappear and local manufacturers would see a resurgence of buyers for their cars, and there would be a huge number of manufacturing jobs become available in the car parts and car manufacturing industry.
All the disloyal people who insist on buying imported cars would be screaming that it is not fair but what are they contributing to the economy as they send their money overseas making some other country wealthy while the US car market and economy stagnate. It is America s love of imported goods that is killing the economy as American manufacturers shut their plants. China grows rich and powerful on money it makes from selling all their sh! T manufactured goods to America. Americans fear the growth of China s military and world influence but does not seem to realise buying their cheap sh! T is making China wealthy as America goes down the plug hole. I think I read that 70% of China s wealth comes from Americans buying their sh! Tty cheap products. If Americans stopped buying Chinese products they would become the nobodies of the world again as they were back in the 1970s with little world influence and power, and if Americans made all these products they now buy off China again America would again be a strong nation as it was.

  • Why do some people buy new cars to save gas? It seems like people complain about high gas prices so they go and buy these expensive gas saving cars. Usually a Honda or Toyota hybrid that's about $35,000 dollars. So what's the point of buying the car if you just wasted all that money. You could have just used that money for gas. Don't you think it's better to just buy a cheap $1,000 dollar Honda and save all that money for gas? Because buying the new car you pretty much threw all the money away.
  • Why do people buy new cars that are in its final year? Like why do people buy 2017 Honda Accord or Odyssey when they are being completely redesigned for 2018? I mean don't you want the latest and the best technology and not 4-5 year old tech?
  • Harley decals on the back of foreign cars/trucks? Has anyone else found it ironic that owners of Japanese cars have HD decals on their back windows? I often wonder why they don't put Honda, Toyota, Nissan, etc decals on the back of their Harleys.
  • A place where they respray cars in OEM colours? I'm looking for an Honda s2000 in Grand Prix white, but they all overpriced. So I'm deciding to buy one in Black and maybe respray it when I have spare cash lying around in the future. I was wondering if Honda offers full resprays, either in Australia or elsewhere… I would be willing to ship the car overseas. If not, does anyone know a company that does?
